Samsung Wave European launch to propel Samsung Apps

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced that has more than tripled the size of its recently launched Samsung Apps store in many of its major European, Asian and Latin American markets, and looks for even more growth with the launch of the Wave smartphone.

Created in September 2009 to provide Samsung smartphone users a dedicated online app destination, Samsung Apps now offers a multitude of new programs, including games, social networking, e-books and health-related tools. Just eight months after its inception, the versions offered in the United Kingdom, France and Italy now have more than three times the number of apps since launch, while Germany doubled its total in the same time span.

European application stores will see even more demand as Samsung debuts its Wave handset, the company's first device to run its bada open smartphone platform. The Wave, a touch-screen smartphone with a 3.3-inch Super AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display, is expected to launch across Europe in Q2 2010.

"Launching the application store has enabled Samsung to increase smartphone sales, while at the same time add value for our existing customer base," said Kanghyun Kwon, vice president, Media Solutions Center, Samsung Electronics. "Samsung Apps allows users to discover new apps, which are consistently making our smartphones more useful, productive and entertaining. In the future, we will continue to offer apps perfectly optimized for our smartphones, and introduce new devices to fit all lifestyles."

Users of the Samsung Omnia, Omnia HD (I8910HD), Omnia II, OmniaLITE and now the Wave mobile devices have the ability to download apps in the store, which is designed to automatically display the relevant application catalog available for a user's specific phone model. Participating application providers include The Associated Press, Astraware, Digital Chocolate, Electronic Arts, Gameloft, Handmark, Layar, MySpace, Namco Bandai, Twitter, Universal Pictures International, WeatherBug, Zagat Survey among many others. Well-known apps include Need for Speed Shift (EA), Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. (Gameloft), 3D Tower BloxxTM Deluxe (Digital Chocolate), WeatherBug (WeatherBug), and ZAGAT TO GO (Handmark).

In the coming weeks, Samsung Apps will be supported by a dedicated Facebook fan page where customers will also be able to get information on the latest promotions offered at the application store. The official Facebook URL will be www.facebook.com/SamsungApps.

The store is currently offered in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Singapore, Hong Kong and Russia, with more than 80 countries and 100 carriers around the world to follow with Wave launch.
