Richard Hammond's Workshop (Discovery+)

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Tuesday, 2nd November 2021, 16:47

Having decided not to drive stupidly fast cars off hillsides any more, the hamster has started to chance his arm & sanity by venturing into private enterprise, by setting up his own car restoration firm, roping in a couple of mechanics he knows quite well (I think they worked on one of his own cars) and taking the plunge.

Only 2 episodes in and it's really engaging, made more entertaining by the fact it's an actual thing he's doing, with his own money & sacrifices, and not something you know took 6 months of pre-planning & local negotiations in case he wanted to crash a combine harvester into a Swiss chalet at some point (for example).

It's on Discovery, so not a service that's going to get as much traction (pardon the pun) as Clarkson's Farm, but Hammond's boyish enthusiasm makes this very watchable, because as much money as he might have personally, you can't just throw personal wealth into a business (as he explains) so you really want him to succeed.

I can't help but feel, like Clarkson's Farm, that whilst it's eye opening as to the costs of running a business, that he isn't truly taking much of a risk as he's being paid to make a show that covers most if not all of the cost of the business.

Maybe, but as he mentions in the third episode, the guys he's convinced to join him in the venture would be ruined if it fails. This thing might only go for one season of 6 episodes, and the situation at the start of episode 4 is so dire he resorts to selling off some, if not most, of his personal car & bike collection to finance getting his shiny new workshop kitted out. He's a wealthy bloke, but there are many reasons, tax usually, why he's not allowed to just pump hundreds of thousands of pounds from his bank account into the business account without it first going through some kind of transaction process, probably due to the VAT involved. The business is legit, by the way. I looked it up.

Plus, this is Discovery+, not Amazon. I'm not sure how much Hammond is getting paid for this, but it certainly won't be as much as the big pink shouty bloke.

Seen episode one now.
I'm surprised he was surprised that 50k wouldn't even touch the sides of this project.

Watched episode 6 which is still enjoyable but a question for yous all.

How come it's on Discovery plus which is available through Sky but they don't list it and I've been having to watch via YouTube?
