Having seen the second episode now, it is very well acted, and you can see how secretive red Russia worked against themselves by their system of political control, and only owning up to the disaster, once Sweden measured the radioactive clouds.

Hats off to those that gave their lives to save further destruction of the plant, that would have decimated the whole of Europe for 100 years. But it makes you think these plants should never be built again no matter the safeguards.

I would recommend anyone to watch this series, as it shows up what Nuclear plants are capable of, when things go badly wrong.

I'm finding the series totally rivetting. I can't wait to see Episode 3. They only seem to suggest that the radiation causes Thyroid Cancer, but being a survivor of the Big C myself, I can't help but wonder if the increase in cancer occurrences from 1 in 3 to 1 in 2 in recent years has anything to do with Chernobyl, and that scares the bejeebers out of me.

Still alive and kicking. You can't get rid of me that easily!

After Cehrnobyl we started drinking Shape milk, because you could freeze it. I have no idea if there was any good reason to do this, but my mum seemed convinced it would help avoid radiation.

My thoughts too. Cancer is far more common than it used to be. Loads of my extended family have had it/died from it/have it currently.

I think there are lots of reasons for this, but don't quote me on them because this is just from memory:

  • Heart attacks don't kill as many as they used to, previously people who may have got cancer would not have lived long enough to
  • Changes in diet mean we are healthier and live longer, the more people that live longer the more will get cancer

Third episode really rubbing in the communist pholosphy of you will do it for the good of the motherland (and in this case, lucky for us,  for the good of all Europe).

The highly radiated dead firefighters being sealed up in welded lead coffins encased in concrete was a rather harrowing scene, knowing their bodies would be a danger for centuries to the living.

In the West at the rime we knew very little that was going on, except for the radioactive winds coming our way, and the eventual encasement over the reactor house to prevent further spread of radiation. And now decades later with the new shield put over that.

So yeah, this was about as close to perfection as television can get. They really got everything right, from the meticulously researched storytelling to the spot-on casting. Production design was off the scale too, making excellent use of the recently decomissioned Ignalina plant in Lithuania.

Having read a lot about Chernobyl in the past, I was glad that they didn't shy away from the science. The final episode did such a great job of breaking down the disaster in a way that was both accurate and digestible at the same time.

Not gonna lie, I got more than a little tear in my eye when I read "They were wrong." during the end captions.

An absolute masterpiece.

Thanks for telling us where much of the outdoor footage was located, as it gave a very realistic setting.

Have to agree with others that the final episode was the icing on the cake, because as an Engineer I can relate to how we are responsible for the making and running of equipment, and systems that are safe, and can be operated correctly.

In this program it was the secrecy of the Communist State that caused problems of hiding things through secrecy, especially with Scientists and Engineers that had to create nuclear systems on the cheap, but it is the same in the West with regard money over safety on any Engineering project where accountants try to cheapen the job. It is one big fight to ensure the job is made on budget, create a good design, meet specification, use decent materials and equipment, and ensure safety comes first as priority.

Russia seems to be just as impressed with the accuracy of the storytelling, to such a degree that they're making their own version of the drama, this time insinuating that fictional CIA agents infiltrated the power plant as workers and were responsible for the disaster. Because the Russia of the time couldn't possibly have been responsible for such shortcomings on their own.
