Beeb salaries

The bag has been opened and the cat released

I can't say I'm massively surprised or upset. They all seem to be the going rate in a world of Premiership and Film/TV rates we know of from elsewhere. In fact I find some of them surprisingly low by comparison.

So now all the Murdoch press is going to stick the knife in, as the traditional Beeb haters are wont to do. I'm sure that means we'll get to know the name of every one working for Newscorp earning more than £150,000, and how much in the form of dividends shareholders earn, as well all the company's tax details.

Watch the hypocrisy fly!

Personally I think this should open up a debate to what the BBC uses licence fee money for...

Or a debate on the government using the beeb pay furore to sneak out the news that if you're 46 or under, you'll now be working till 68 before getting your pension instead of 67.

You could, but plenty of people have noticed including those in the media who would be affected, so if it doesn't hit the news then whose fault is that?

Shearer and Fiona Bruce £400k for what???

They'd work for half that and still be extremely well paid.

Being on telly is a huge perk, think of all the spin old events it brings.

This is a regressive tax and it is being frittered.

It's there so we'll spend it.

Nice to have job when there's any number to step in and take up the reins when your off on your holidays or little projects too.

I don't believe anyone working for the BBC should be earning more than the PM.

I think the BBC should focus on programming and that the BBC should be used as a stepping stone to better things rather than try to compete with commercial organisations.

Programming needs talent. Talent needs money, money that commercial broadcasters are willing to pay. If the Beeb can't compete, then there will be no programming of any quality better than the equivalent of wall to wall Wayne's World. Comparing presenters' wages to politicians wages is a false equivalence. Fairer to compare wages across the public and private sectors. Best measure is to take the beeb's total wage bill, divide it by the total number of its employees, and see how much more or less that is than the national average wage.

Seriously?  I don't even see the link between the two - especially when there are many civil servants earning more then the PM anyway.
It's market forces and apparently the BBC are far from the highest payers - but presumably paying the kinds of figures they do (many were less than I was expecting) allows them to get a certain type/quality of person?

That's exactly the same argument, that shouldn't be happening either...
