New Star Trek coming back to TV in 2017!

Well I say TV, but CBS will be making it a streaming exclusive on their CBS All Access Subscription Streaming service in the US. Not what I'd call TV.

No idea what it will be about yet, which era it's set in, or even which universe.  Still, interesting times...

Lets hope this will be far better than 'Enterpirse'.

The last version of Star trek called 'Enterprise' destroyed the franchise for a while, as fans deserted it in droves, including me. The time travel arc story was a total mess, and you needed an asprin just to watch it, never mind understand it.

Scott Bakula was a disasterous pick as the Captain, as all older viewers were thinking its that guy off 'quantum leap', whats he doing on Star trek.

I suspect interest in Star Trek TV series' was waning long before Enterprise which premiered in 2001. I never watched it but seem to remember it was an attempt to hark back to the simpler times of TOS without abusing a holodeck for plots, which didn't quite succeed?

This is interesting:

Fall 1987 - Spring 1988: 8.55 Million
Fall 1988 - Spring 1989: 9.14 Million
Fall 1989 - Spring 1990: 9.77 Million
Fall 1990 - Spring 1991: 10.58 Million
Fall 1991 - Spring 1992: 11.50 Million
Fall 1992 - Spring 1993: 10.83 Million
Fall 1993 - Spring 1994: 9.78 Million
Fall 1994 - Spring 1995: 7.05 Million
Fall 1995 - Spring 1996: 6.42 Million
Fall 1996 - Spring 1997: 5.03 Million
Fall 1997 - Spring 1998: 4.53 Million
Fall 1998 - Spring 1999: 4.00 Million

So before Enterprise came along, it was down to nearly a third of its peak viewing audience. From the wiki page, Enterprise started off at 5.9m in 2001 falling at a similar pace on average to the above, ending up around 2.9m.

Alongside the TV series, Star Trek movies were doing badly as well. It took J.J. to resurrect the franchise, and drag it out of the dead end it had long painted itself into.

I think slowly TV audiences moved on and matured, I can't see it coming back successfully in any way like it's original forms. It needs a real reboot, hope they don't decide to throw a load of teenagers and follow them through a Star Trek Academy. :(

Like most of the Star Trek TV series, Enterprise started off weakly and matured into something half decent. A few episodes aside, the first couple of seasons of TNG were crap - nothing but tired rehashes of the old sixties stories, complete with short skirts etc. DS9 was similarly lacklustre, then turned into some of the best Trek ever. Voyager was pretty terrible to begin with and never reached the level of the others, but it had its moments and it went on. In short, Enterprise followed a similar trajectory to the other shows, it's just that people were bored of ST after the best part of twenty years on TV.

I think Chris above has summed it up pretty well. I remember watching Star Trek (Kirck Spock etc) as a kid, and loved it, didn't liek TNG at first as it was boring.

Anyway, I was round a mate's one day who used to buy TNG on video, watched a couple and started to get into it, same with Voyager, but that was partially because I hated Janeway's voice at first, but once I got past that I really liked it :)

DS9 I always liked, but as everyone knows, it got better when Sisko grew a goatee :)

Enterprise I quite liked, but it had that problem prequals have, where it couldn't do certain things for risk of upsetting the Trekkies/Trekkers/fan ppl.

Maybe they're hoping with Star Wars coming out ppl will be excited about "traditional" Sci Fi on TV.

The Next Generation had an easy ride. Back in 1987, there were what, four major networks in the US, four channels in the UK, and Satellite and Cable were yet  to proliferate. Add to that, an utter absence of sci-fi on TV. You had the cachet of the original series, with none of the baggage of the 24th Century, so it's no wonder that TNG got the figures it did. Deep Space Nine did something different, it's premiere got the highest  ratings of any Trek show ever, but they plummeted after that. And its story really played to a niche audience. But when it came out, the multi-channel generation had begun, and it was on against X-Files, Babylon 5, Stargate, Buffy, and a whole host of other sci-fi shows in a renewed genre. Then it was up against Star Trek Voyager as well, which is the dumbest decision ever. It might work for CSI, but sci-fi is expensive, you can't afford to split your audience.

The Networks screwed Enterprise. The creators wanted a prequel worthy of the name. The plan was to spend half a season on Earth before the ship launched. The Network saw what was planned, and didn't recognise it as Trek, so from day one, continuity went out the window, they threw in time travel, and made the whole thing look more advanced and further in the future than TOS. But the story was tired by then, they were following the formula established by TNG, evolved into Voyager (space totty and space hedgehog on the crew), and lost any semblance of creativity or originality.

I'm curious about this new series. Star Trek needs a reinvention  the way that nu-Doctor Who got. A new look, new music, new storytelling style. My worry is that it will go all Abrams-Trek, and ditch any meaning and depth, the allegorical storytelling for surface and lens flare.

“Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller has found his next mission: showrunner and co-creator of CBS’ new “Star Trek” series.

A longtime fan of science fiction, Fuller began his career writing for “Star Trek: Voyager” (1997-2001) and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1997).

“My very first experience of ‘Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the ‘Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire,” said Fuller. “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of ‘Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no ‘Star Trek’ series has gone before.

I'd watch a darker more grown up Star Trek, hope they go that direction!

I'm first to admit that I'm no Trekkie, However I accept the fact that Star Trek has a huge following yet the franchise itself is to blame for Star Trek's TV downfall.

During TOS airing the ratings were not great but thanks to Syndication during the early 70's it achieved cult status leading to many movies.

The problem IMHO has been down to the fact that while fans were enjoying "the Final Frontier" on the big screen they were given TNG on TV, "Generations" on the big screen while Deep Space Nine was on TV, "Insurrection & Nemesis" on the big screen while on TV they had Voyager & Enterprise.

Far too many characters/time lines going on at the same time, At least when "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" came out it was still only TOS airing on TV .

While I've become a fan of JJ Abrams Star Trek movies I think Star Trek as a TV show will fail yet again for the above reasons.

And the announcement is made... Netflix exclusive across the world. Except the US and Canada.

Won't be watching this.
