RE: [VIDEO] Top Gear really is back!

The solution is to end car ownership. Turn cars into Boris bikes, make them all self-driving, so you get into the nearest one and tell it to take you where you want to go, pay for the trip, cheaper if there are other passengers as well, and it then goes off to serve the next passenger. If you want to drive it yourself, scan your driving licence to take control.

The other thing is to change the way people work, flexitime for as many as possible, so journeys can be staggered, spreading out rush hours. We have tens of millions of vehicles, all spending over 95% of their lives parked. How wasteful is that?

It's hard to argue against that, whilst also not liking the idea. :)

Do you remember phone booths and the many and varied uses they were put to, Superman excepted? Preferable to having your own mobile, I think not.

I drive a private hire and the state passengers leave it in even with me in the car does not give me any hope at all for the ideal scenario you paint.

What I don't like about public transport is that you are in with unhealthy germ ridden 'coughing their guts up' people, and waste and sick is lying around, and people swearing, drinking, music blasting and screaming down mobile phones, and not giving any consideration to fellow passengers. And that's just the Australians.

I will keep my private transport no matter what, thank you.

I hate the idea too. But the current model just isn't sustainable. The waste of resources in an era where we need to look after the environment! 30 million cars could be 10 million taxis, could be 3 million mini-buses could be 250,000 double decker buses and so on.

I love my car. I love the privacy. I love the false sense of security (it won't protect me from car-jacking, accidents, or some yobbo smashing the window and p***ing in the seat whie it's parked), and most of all I love the sense of full control I have over my environment and the world.

That psychology isn't a natural state for humans. It needs to be treated, or if not, replicated in an environment away from the car (man/woman/other cave anyone?).

Another idea might be to bite the bullet raise the taxes, and create a National Transport Service, free at the point of use for everyone. We're part-way there with pensioner's bus passes. As bandi will no doubt agree, we live in a linked up, surveillance society, with the govt knowing what we do and when, and it won't be complicated to transfer that to a transport system.

Free transport to and from and for work and education, and free transport for NHS appointments. Every adult gets 100 free miles on top of that a week, every under 16 gets 20 miles. And it's a holistic thing, so it includes taxis and vans and the like, so getting your weekly shop home, dumping twenty bags of rubble at the municipal dump don't require owning a car.

People have been calling for an intervention to save Chris Harris from being bullied, which I thought was quite funny.

Not that the program isn't....well no it isn't but have fun anyway.

It has made me think a little, at times, that it looked like Chris is that poor kid that really wants to hang around with the cool kids and lets them get away with bullying him because of it.
