Page 1 of Most morally bankrupt takeover since... (insert reference here)?

Now I'm not an an avid football follower by any means,. Apart from international tournaments most of the league stuff goes over my head, but I tend to notice the big stories. Such as Newcastle United being taken over by a country will known for human rights offences, murdering critics and the subjugation of women in general. But if that country ploughs millions into a soccer team, it seems it's all sins forgiven, so let's put tea-towels on our heads and welcome our new barbaric overlords, just as long as we keep winning matches, right?

So shady was the deal, in fact, that even the British Government has refused to abide by a FOI request, as revealing the details would 'harm the mutual relationship' between the countries.

But now other top-flight clubs are quite rightfully throwing their hands up and asking what the dickens has gone on behind the scenes

The latest HIGNFY had a tweet displayed from someone commenting that Saudi are putting more money into Newcastle than they did into 9/11.

Its disgraceful and doesn't bode well for the EPL but now the other 19 PL teams have demanded a meeting about how this was passed so quickly and with no details, EPL says its confidential , of course it did...should be immediately scrapped or this is a chance for the other clubs to take a stand and demand change.

Of course, but It was the only name that sprung to mind when trying to think of another takeover in (fairly) recent memory that was wholly unpopular with the public as a whole

I'd probably change the title too.
I'm not sure it's comparable and is hardly recent.
As far as the takeover being allowed though, I'd stick it in with Snaps's superb avalanche and snowball analogy.

I think the main problem is the people who will complain won't be the Toon Army, and they won't complain because they've been starving for so long when someone finally offers them food, how are they going to reject it? It's very hard to blame them. :/

Past caring.

The events of the last year alone and the aborted Euro Super League where a pitiful fine was the only outcome of actually trying to destroy the foundation of national leagues - and they're still going to try and do it again.  All the fans of those clubs who were protesting at the time, no longer give a toss.

Everton have been unable to make inroads into the transfer market over the last summer because of Fair Play rules that the bigger clubsl just ignore.

Man City have also been taken over by a nation state and no one now really gives a s*** so long as Pep continues winning.

And the likes of Bury and Derby have been docked a significant amount of points for daring to overspend or go into administration during a pandemic.

If the Toon want to come in and spoil the party for the likes of the 'Big 6", then go for it...
