"It's sad though isn't it, that some athletes are crowdfunding, and get gold, and there are some don't get past qualifying, and say "I'm just glad to be here, I didn't think I'd get very far" like it's a massive jolly :("

I think that's misunderstanding things a little, medallists aren't born, they have to grow. And you need experience as well as training to do that.

Some of today's qualifiers for the olympic games (remember to qualify you have to be among the best in the world) will be tomorrows medal hopes, and some of today's medal winners will be tomorrows gold medallists.

If you think obsessively regulating your diet and training as a professional athlete is anything jolly, you should try it for just a week!

That's probably the privately run, often indoors ones, they've had a hard time like music venues last 18 months, not being allowed to let ppl in. A few started doing private bookings, but you could only hire for your household, much like some swimming pools had to do to get some income.

Southsea Skatepark is run as a charity, so hurts more when vandals break in overnight, cause damage, and steal the steel etc :(

the public outdoor ones in parks seem to be doing well.

I was perhaps being facetious, and yes she would have been training for a long time, and if she was best in that event we had, i guess that pool of money is already spoken for.

Back when Eddie the Eagle was competing, our entries for each field really were the best we had, and it didn't matter if they weren't good enough. But (triggered specifically by Eddie's appearances) the Olympic committee brought in rules to ensure that only the top 30% (or top 50, whichever is less) in that field in the world qualify to compete.

That is a very, very small number of people! To get to the Olympics you have to be among the best in the world.

And then there is the UK funding (which comes from the National Lottery mostly I believe), where lack of success in your field results in your funding being cut. Basically, the money goes where the success is.

If you want to try something fun, see how long you can run at the marathon pace of either Eliud Kipchoge, or Brigid Kosgei. :) It's worth trying just to get a comprehension of what these athletes are doing. And actually, you probably don't even need to pick the best in the world, try the pace of the people who didn't qualify for the final.

I seem to recall they did that on the Beebs News/sports website a while back and with top athletes from other sports.
Maybe a it was a cross sport thing as I think they did the same thing with cycling.

When I was young and fit(ish) I got in a two man Pedalo on holiday with a club cyclist. I couldn't even match his speed to keep my feet on the pedals.

Actually yes, I had forgotten that it's best X in the world, rather than the country getting to choose its best ppl for the events they thought they'd do well in.

I couldn't possibly do a marathon, for the simple reason I don't have the Nike trainers which make you win ;)

Funny you should say that but I was out on my mountain bike recently but on a road.  I was going at 13mph - which isn't a bad pace to keep up and is moving a fair bit.  I thought exactly the same as you - this is almost identical to a marathon runner pace - and I'm not sure I could reach that speed at all on foot - never mind for 26 miles!

My mate is a club cyclist too and let's say 12 or 13 years ago often 'met' Chris Boardman while out on a Sunday.  He said you could hear him approaching from behind, such was the speed.  Sometimes he'd slow down and have a few words, while my mate was giving it all he had.  He'd then say 'Bye' and he said he literally pulled away from him like he's slammed his brakes on - he jokingly said it was quite depressing but totally demonstrated what a different planet these people are on to us mere mortals..
He also had him pass him on a few hills as he's panting his way up and said he passeed him at a speed he wasn't sure he'd get to if he was going the other way!

I think a half decent club cyclist is expected to do 20mph. You literally test yourself by marking out a flat circuit of 20 miles and try to complete it in an hour.

That's not good, hope it's a mix up, we have such a good reputation for being clean. :/
