just watched the women's football, could have gone either way

then watched the BMX racing, shame I knew the result, but still exciting stuff!

managed to find the surfing, it's not much of a spectator sport, as a lot of it is watching them wait for the right wave. When they do, it's quite amazing. Funny thing, I was watching it thinking "that guys good" even though I know little about it, then the commentator said he's world number 1 :)

and I saw some of the canoe slalom, that's bonkers :)

Shame to see GB go out of the football :( At least they didn't have to suffer the penalties, I guess.

BMX was great wasn't it!

Well we did miss a penalty earlier in the game (then they went up the other end and scored).

The women's 100m was interesting, mostly because the end was like a soap opera/playground dinner lady telling kids to shake hands ;)

BMX freestyle however - wow - wwaw - shame the BBC videos show winner in title again, but never mind.

Even more excited about skateboarding park coming up in the week.

Not really interested in the Olympics but came across this on social media:

Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg commentating...aye, it's a real thing and genius casting...

I'm sure there are maybe longer and better quality videos on youtube, but this will give you a flavour of their vibe.

I would imagine Sky Brown now has a much larger social media following :)
So happy for her.

Caught some of the boxing earlier, seems weird to be disappointed to "only" get a silver, mayor for a day is not bad consolation ;)

but I remember a few years ago, one of the mums the missus knew from a playgroup posted to say she was sorry to let ppl down by being knocked in first round of an event in last summer olympics! I'm glad to say every reply comment was supportive, saying it's amazing to be good enough to be selected to represent your country etc, but I guess if you've planned this for 4/5 years and did believe you'd get gold, then silver is "disappointing".

Didn't see much of sailing, but again another nice display of happiness from winning :)

We equalled our medal tally from 2012, lots of talk of bike and skate parks to be created across the UK to foster talent, none of team GB caught covid.

Hmmn, these aren't the figures I saw somewhere else, but they'll have to do for moment until I can find the ones I want to quote ;)

https://www.uksport.gov.uk/our-work/investing-in-sport/current-funding-figures

it's a shame it doesn't break it down more, athletics is a pretty big bracket, do the 100m runners get the same as the shot putters, I doubt it.

I get that say horsy dancing needs more money than diving, but the breakdown I saw the other day, demonstrated a typical govt picture, i.e. old boys club gets the lion's share of the money goes to certain sports, and then the rest is fought over.

It's sad though isn't it, that some athletes are crowdfunding, and get gold, and there are some don't get past qualifying, and say "I'm just glad to be here, I didn't think I'd get very far" like it's a massive jolly :(

It was interesting how China uses their money, and takes money from one sport to try ad buy a gold in another, i.e. they took funds away from martial arts, which I assume they knew how they would do, and put the money into skateboarding, now here's the interesting bit, they used that money to hire ex pro skateboarders as trainers, to train gymnasts to be skaters. That "feels" wrong, but probably 'cos it's China, and if it was any other sport I probably wouldn't care, and at the end of the day, the Chinese skater was good, but as the commentator said, she didn't look quite right.

When I used to skate, there was a couple of mini ramps locally, but the closest skate park was a 30 min drive away, which you had to pay to use, so I only went when my mum took me in school holidays, it's good that over the last few years more have popped up, free to use, in parks and by playparks, but I wonder if local councils use the budget for slides and swings, or the budget for goalposts for them?

The local council has been meaning to redevelop the one in the town centre , but like most things, these things need to be maintained, and it hasn't been looked after properly so needs redoing completely :(

are worth looking at, they have time lapse videos of parks being built :)
