Is this the most bizarre use of VAR so far?

it's interesting, in that VAR got the right decision, but interrupting half time, is one thing, but doesn't do much for the argument that it won't interrupt the flow of play.

I think if used properly VAR should work, but does this mean that half time could be used to change card decisions, and other decisions that were made before the whistle? How far back can you go?

Do they say how long elapsed between the incident and half time?

You can't really argue for it interupting the flow of play, when nobody was on the field though. ;)
