Mac's just work, mainly because there are only about 3 of them, and you can't upgrade anything ever. It's a lot easier to write software for a tiny subset of hardware!

I think I'm just not a big fan of Apple's business model, plus they're absolute arseholes when it comes to right to repair, especially when the hacks at their genius bars haven't got a clue when it comes to actually recognising/diagnosing faults and charging an appropriate fee for the work that's actually needed.

My neighbour contacted me in a panic a few weeks ago (before alll this crap started to get serious) asking for help as her Mac had started making a funny noise and she was halfway through an OU course and didn't want to lose anything. She spokewith Apple who told her she'd have to bring it in for diagnosis & repair, but as an estimate, they quoted her £500 for 2 new cooling fans as 'they sounded like they were on their way out'.

She's a single mum so didn't have that money to spare, and as I've repaired a few computers & lappys in the close in the past, she asked me to take a look. I did indeed take a look, and advised her to get her hoover and vacuum all the vents (it's one of those macs where it's just a screen & keyboard). Despite the initial look of scepticism, she assured me she'd give it a go, and 20 minutes later sent me a message to let me know the noise had stopped. The Apple store would have just ripped out the fans and charged her half a grand for something that a little housekeeping would solve.

Louis Rossman repairs Apple products, posting his work on youtube. Most of these videos start with him reading the initial diagnosis, which more often than not, is 100% wrong.
