I think they've realised that as the media creation tool can only upgrade a PC that is currently running a valid key, it's far more customer friendly to continue to allow the upgrade rather than insisting that existing customers with perfectly functioning OS's spend over £100 on W10, as removing the the support for earlier versions of windows is tantamount to holding the machines to ransom.
Most new lappys & pre-built towers would come with W10 pre-installed, so they only stand to make any money off retail copies from new builds, which is probably a small percentage of machines overall. If this is actually what they're doing, then well done them. But on the other hand, they're probably making up the shortfall by selling all that sweet, sweet W10 telemetry to third parties

Writer`s Release
I suggested two of my kids who it applied to allow the upgrades when it was released and, as I've mentioned in another thread, it cabbaged both laptops.
Kept insisting that the original Windows 7 wasn't legit, which it was, and no amount of contact with Microsoft ever solved the problem.

I am not young enough to know everything.
Do you not have a hidden partition on the hard drive that contains windows 7 back to factory settings?
This is why I do not get rid of my win 7 computer, as if things go drastically wrong (the black or blue screen of death, difficult malware etc), I can go back to factory settings, and reinstate other programs and files, I have on memory sticks. It does take me 3 hours though, so glad it does not need this done very often, but not being a computer fault expert, it is the last option, and I take it
As for upgrades and updates (I think win 7 no longer does updates as stated in this thread), I never put any in, as they tended to damage or hinder or slow down the computer.
you can join the insider program and download and install for free.
Interestingly on one of the old laptops the girls are using while being "homeschooled", they're now using Linux mint, as a recent Windows update meant the WiFi kept dropping out from dining room! Mint it's fine, so I guess a driver update made it worse!

Microsoft make their money from Office subscriptions basically now instead of Windows.
Pretty sure they don't sell any data.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..
Yeh, I don't think they sell the data, it's so they can target the adverts etc better, and maybe to make windows better/see where it went wrong.
