does dual channel make much of a difference to everyday usage?

the old pc I hardly use upstairs freezes now and again, so I thought I'd run memtest, something I've recommended a billion times but hardly ever done myself :)

anyway, this looks bad I think ;)

so i took out all the memory, put 1 stick back in the first slot (it's a blue slot oooh) 1gb stick of crucial, and 1/2 way through pass 2 I stopped it, as it was passing

so I put the other crucuial 1gb stick in the other blue slot (next to it) and it's passing, so on to to test the 2 hynix 512m b sticks next.

so, assuming onlyone of them fails, would I be best to just use the 2 1gb crucial sticks, or both of them and a 512?

my gut feeling is, unless I sit there and watch various bench marking tests I probably won't know, so it's not likely to matter :)

I really do have a love/hate relationship with computers, on one hand, they're my bread and butter, and I don't know much about anything else, on the other hand they drive me mad :(

So each stick was fine in slot1, put all 4 back in, shows pre post sreen and get stuck there :( so take 2 out of black slots and testing again, if this works will just put 2 1gb sticks in blue slots and be done with it.

This mesh pc has served me well. It's funny how apart from HDD it's back to how it was, I had upgraded PSU and graphics card, but they since died so gone back to original ones.

It's so old now it's not worth spendng money on it, even looking on eBay, with several other working laptops in the house seems a waste of time/money, bt it's nice to have a spare/backup :)

I had thought about putting freenas on it, bu with the current state of it, if ihave issues I won't know where they are :(

They are frustrating things when you have any problems. :(

I bought two sticks of ram for my arcade cabinet to double it from 4gb to 8gb, and then realised it was DDR2 (which is fine, it has 4 DDR2 slots) but the 4gb I had in there already was DDR3 and the mobo didn't support both types at the same time. :/

It took me a while to realise this as I swapped sticks around.

In the end I had to wait for and find another set of 2gb sticks of DDR2 on ebay before I could actually upgrade it.

It amazes me that this works, but so often it works. I think at the frequencies they operate at it doesn't take much to flip a single bit every now and again.
