Help - laptop

Well the the eldest has saved £150 in Christmas money... she had seen a cheap computer at Tesco and Argos for about that price... and typical child the money is burning hole in her pocket!

https://www.tesco.com/direct/acer-aspire-es11-es1-132-11-intel-celeron-4gb-ram-32gb-storage-laptop-with-office-365-and-1tb-onedrive-cloud-storage-red/113-8555.prd?skuId=113-8555

looks to me that it will get outdated quickly and isnt really what she needs for school, in the coming years

15 minutes earching online and found these

https://www.ebuyer.com/808485-lenovo-v110-laptop-80td000duk

any thoughts... seems quite well specced for the price, dont know anything about Lenova, but i know someone who has bought a similar HP but with AMD8, they seem happy with that?

also this from PC World
https://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-320s-14ikb-14-laptop-grey-10169166-pdt.html

seems to have a huge discount... is there a reason for this, is it obsolete, or actually like most sale items cheap, and priced at the higher price for 30 days, in a corner of a distant store to set the price, specially for sale price?

I know this goes on, when i worked in retail, one of my stores had a random 4ft bay at ther rear specifically for this reason to set pre-sale prices!

Or have you seen something i havent found?

Thanks

I'm not super up to do any more, but immediate thoughts are to avoid the first one, never mind the fact that it's a celeron which would immediately put a lot of ppl off, 11" screen means I'd say unsuitable for homework, that sort of small netbook now I think are largely redundant as ppl use their phones or tablets for their intended use, i.e. sat on the sofa looking at the internet.

Lenovo are the big Chinese Co that bought the IBM laptop and desktop department years ago. Don't let that put you off though their machines are often good, I worked for a company that switched to them from Dell, and they seemed good. Some ppl may turn their noses up at the AMD processor, but you're looking at budget machines, so you need to make some sacrifices somewhere,

As long as they're not expecting to play latest games, heavy photoshop use, video, sound editting etc most of these machines are going to be much of a muchness, swings and roundabouts whether you'd rather have the slower processor, but more memory, or better processor but less ram, and you could then read a billion different opinions on how the bestter processor means less memory is fine etc ;)

the pc world one has an SSD so will boot faster, and may run faster for some things, but if it's just going to be used for internet, storing video/music then the ebuyer one could be better.

have you tried dell outlet? they can have some real bargain if you don't mind returns/refurbs, some are as good as new.

hotukdeals is place to keep an eye on, as ppl more up to date than me will point out flaws in any deals.

As you say/know, you do have to be careful with PCWorld reductions, as yes maybe it once was a £530 laptop, but the spec now is more of a £300 machine. This can be big issue, as when a new generation of processor launches, the improvements mean that say the new i5 processors are as good as the old i7s, new i3s as good as old i5s etc, so if you really want to get into it then tomshardware may need some reading, especially the performance charts, and going around in circles :(

However, saying all that, once they have it at home, as long as they're happy and aren't going to be running benchmarks and comparing with other ppl there probably won't be an issue :)

Memory is always more important than CPU, if you run out of that it doesn't matter how fast a CPU you have, you're system is running at the speed of your HDD.

Thanks gent's now ordered... happy little girl in a few days i suspect!

Of note the Dell Chat function was really good, i looked at a different Laptop with an Intel chip, that was £120 more expensive, the advisor explained that actually the cheaper laptop was the better one, they even emailed me a 10% discount.
