As is the BBC basically telling everyone how to do it. They haven't issued the patch yet so thanks to irresponsible news outlets, even more Macs are at risk

Not really no. The BBC, and everywhere else (macworld, macrumors, techradar, theregister, guardian etc. etc.) are doing their job and reporting.
The general 'rule' in these instances is for the person who finds such flaws and security issues to report them to the software company (and give them time to fix the issue) - they often get a reward for it and are known as whitehat hackers.
Google are good at fixing issues once reported, Micro$oft less so..

It's awful, it's a terrible bug, but unless you try to recreate it you should be safe until the patch as long as you don't leave your Macbook unlocked.

If you try and recreate it on the other hand...
