Opinion re a new laptop....

pat-w (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 25th July 2017, 14:43

So I'm trying to find myself a new Windows 10 laptop. The most important thing for me is it must be light, with a bright clear screen. My budget is a max of £500. You would think this would be an easy thing to find but it's driving me nuts. Anyway the reason I'm posting is to ask if anyone is still using a Windows 10 PC without a touch screen. I've seen a PC that seems to fit the bill apart from no touch screen. It's a refurbished Toshiba machine with a 12 months warranty. This is the link....

Anyone have an opinion please?
Thanks

we use windows 10 without a touch screen, on PCs at work, and the missus' laptop at home (a £300 HP) has no touch screen, and that's fine to use.

8gb ram and ssd, that should be nippy :)

Don't read too much into the i7 bit, there's a lot more to it than that - even in the same generation of processors. I'd be inclined to look for a later gen i5.
I couldn't imagine going back to a non-SSD hard disk now.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

That certainly looks fine on paper.

I considered a touch screen for a long time, but in the end thought it still might be a bit of a gimmick, unless perhaps you plumped for a convertible laptop/tablet.

I went for a refurbed Lenovo T430 Thinkpad fairly recently on the advice of my brother. Very pleased with my choice. This machine would have probably cost a grand new, £315 refurbed. It's win10 pro, 256gb ssd, 8gb ram, i5 with a 14" screen. Goes like shyte off a shovel and the battery lasts absolutely hours (this can still be a bit hit-and-miss with a refurb). Because the Thinkpads are workhorse machines, they are supposedly 'bombproof' and easy to fix and replace bits and pieces. Maybe won't turn heads but personally I wanted a solid work machine which it absolutely is. It's got a really fantastic keyboard backlight/toplight which is way more handy than I ever thought possible!

I agree the touchscreen should not limit your purchase decision as i personally don't find it that useful (you'll naturally go to use the trackpad anyway - just one of those things!)

FWIW you can't go wrong with Asus, some of the best laptops i've used have been by them and they seem to have the least bloatware.

I use a desktop for my main video editing/heavy work, but for just getting daily things done (like typing this), i use a Chromebook - just so reliable and easy to use (although not without limitations)

Just my opinion though, there's plenty out there but that's also the problem, the laptop market is more saturated than the pitta bread in a kebab!

Alfie, does your Lenovo have a dvd drive? Because the eBay T430 listings have a built-in drive. Also seem to be quite heavy. Thanks

It does have a DVD drive and it's not particularly light, tbh. They aren't terribly sleek and slimline, but still quite compact being a 14" screen.

Thanks for replying. Still considering a ThinkPad because of very high spec for the money. Plus tomorrow eBay are running a promotion of 10x Nectar points so might order one tomorrow. :-)

Thanks all for your help.
I ordered a Lenovo T430 refurbished from eBay.
It's an i5 16GB ram 480GB SSD so hopefully last me a couple of years.
Plus £20 of Nectar points too :-)

EDIT, this one http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/172775847414
