"But if photos is your thing, definitely keep with official inks, because otherwise you will find yourself exponentially printing out an ever increasing number of photos!"
If the budget ever allows it I'll buy a second printer specifically for photo printing and it would have to be A3 or I wouldn't bother.
The price of good quality prints and so much more, mugs, cushions, books etc make that less likely by the year though.

I am not young enough to know everything.
I still have an Epson R300 running under W10!
Have always used compatibles and they were fine for photos but certainly did fade quicker. I use even cheaper ones now (just for the kids' homework really) and wouldn't really print many photos probably - but for any I did want printing I'd just pay for them anyway.
Occasionally it does say they're not Epson cartridges but usually taking them out and replacing them gets rid of the error.
I don't think it's worth buying a decent one if you don't use it much as it will only dry out anyway and you'd use more ink cleaning the heads lol.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..
Some general info for anyone in a similar situation, after a chat with my local ink shop. They don't have a website otherwise I'd give them a plug.
Go for Epson and make sure it uses Strawberry inks, assuming they're really dead (very niche joke).
Compatibles from them come out at £20 quid a set but he says they're nearly twice the size of the old model that I use. Looking online you can get them even cheaper. Avoid anything using Epson Orange inks as our inscrutable friends in the east haven't reverse engineered them yet.

Cartridges with 4ml of ink cost 50p to make but sold at £3,000 per litre

I feel unclean.
I've read the Daily Mail.
Strange they didn't flag printer ink as a cause/cure for cancer and did I miss the link to Princess Di.

The Express is the one that links everything to Di's death!

Easy to confuse them. I don't have eyes down that end. 😉

"One advantage of an old printer, you can still find the inks on ebay cheaper than third party ones would have cost you."
Should have asked back when you posted this.
Where do you get your genuine inks from and how the hell do you make sure they're genuine.

Ebay!
I have a watch for the ink cart numbers, filter out non-UK sellers, and then various keywords that third party ink sellers tend to use. Also genuine ones are most often sold by individuals so will have pictures of either the foil sealed packet or the box.
If you take the long term approach, aim to have say 2 spares of each colour cart in stock, and whenever you have less than 2 start paying attention to auctions and buy anything under £3, you can quite quickly get a few sets for hardly anything.
Also would recommend a chip resetter thingy, gets you about another third of a carts worth of ink after the printer moans its empty.
