Question for the Pooter savvy.

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 30th August 2016, 09:44

If I've got an external HDD which blue screens my XP PC whenever I plug it in is that liable to be any different with a new Windows 10 machine?
Also would installing Ubuntu on an older Laptop be a likely work around to get into said drive?

at which point does it bsod?

do you mean, if you plug it in, then power on the pc, you get bsod and windows won't load, or you are logged into windows, then get bsod as soon as you plug it in you get bsod?

you need to test it on another pc really to see if it's the external hd or the pc.

you could try booting a live ubuntu cd to see if that makes any difference, it could be the xp machine has got a corrupt file, or somehting silly like the file system on the usb drive is broken so xp s***s itself.

could be that usb port on the mob, have you tried another one?

Bsod with PC already up and running and when plugged into either of the front facing USB ports.
Unplug it and restart the PC and it comes back up with no problem.
I was just wondering if I should risk it on a brand new Win 10 PC which I will have to buy ASAP as I can't access my accounts now on Dropbox (see Dropbox post).

Considering this one if anyone wants to offer an opinion.

Have you tried to log into dropbox.com online? All your stuff will still be there and you can download it all if necessary.

Ta. I didn't think it had all disappeared, not quite that senile. Probably able to access it all of my Tablet as well. Just another in the long list of sh*t that doesn't work on it anymore and needs a work around.
Useful extra reason to explain to the management why a new PC is essential😉

what does event viewer say just before the bsod, and as unlikely as it sounds does the bsod say anything useful

if it says something like usb.sys then that could be the problem,

start
run

eventvwr

hardware tab may say something about disk error or usb

eventvwr just gives me

Application
Security
System
ACEEventlog
Internet Explorer   (which I never use)
iolo Applications

No hardware tab
Had a trawl through what's there (and there's a lot) can't see anything obvious.
I'll resurrect an old laptop tomorrow and see if that get's the same result.

You know when an obvious answer has been sitting in the room waving it's arms and shouting 'Over here'?
That.
My old Samsung Netbook to the rescue (Win 7).
Plugged the drive into it. One 'Do you want to scan and repair File headings' later and we're back.
Now I'm going to shove it all on the cloud somewhere in case it happens again.
