SIM card cutting

admars (Elite) posted this on Friday, 13th May 2016, 11:43

Hi,
think I may need a new phone soon, battery needs to be charged every morning, and I switch it off at night and don't use it much during the day, it's quite old, Android 2.3.6 gingerbread, so a lot of newer apps, mobile banking etc don't work on it any more :(

I'll prob get something cheapish like a Blu or Wileyfox which seems to give better bang per buck at around £100,(maybe a few quid more for a known make if it makes sense)

however, my phone has mini sim, I think newer ones generally have micro sim.

assuming I stay on Orange, so just get a phone, am I safe to cut the card myself with scissors? it looks easy enough, or am I better off buying a tool, or going into one of those shops that unlocks phones and get them to do it?

Or just ask Orange for one that fits the new phone. No reason they shouldn't send it for free, Three do.

Yeah give them a call they'll send you one. I'm sure you can just pick one up instore too if you don't want to wait.

Cutting works too, better with a Stanley blade than scissors though.

hope you don't mind going off topic, but thought it worth saying I had a Wileyfox & it was a nightmare.
Now using an Honor x5 without any problems.

yeh, the wileyfox running cryogen or whatever it's called was a bit of a concern, does that work with mobile banking ok? I was reading about one of these other cheap phones doesn't work with mobile banking cos it has Intel inside!?!? I'm sure there's more to it than that but that's what thy were told. maybe I'll start a £100 mobile thread :) I'm not interested in messing around with mods etc, I just want something simple, like my Samsung Mini 2 is. ppl I used to work with took the p*** but fulfills my needs.

I went sim free a few phones back and always phone Three when I change phones and need a new type sim card. Probably cost them pennies, the money for them is in retaining your custom and monthly payments.

Got an Honor 7 myself, Android 6 and with the default Google theme, dual sim/sim and micro SD slot, you can choose which combination of those 2. Not the greatest camera by a way, and no NFC for Google pay when it goes live, if that is a concern.  At one point it was £179 on Amazon. Now about £250 but the 5X mentioned above looks like a decent alternative with a bigger screen, 5.5inches. £190 on Amazon. Honor are a subsidary of Huawei, one of their more budget brands.

Cryogen is just a flavour of Android that has had some third party customisation but should work with any standard Android apps including banking. More concerning with the Wily phones is the build quality with the charging ports breaking being a regular complaint, one reason I discounted them.

Have a look at the Moto G 2015 which is around the £100 on amazon now. It reviews well for a budget handset.

If you want something bigger with decent performance I can personally recommend the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6. Cost me £125 when first released, now down to £100. 5.5" phone, good screen, pretty nippy, 16GB of storage (which is expandable). Prefer it to my old Moto G. It was pretty much named best buy budget handset across the board a while back.

yes, I think I've seen that mentioned on hukd when these £100 phones have been posted, and then in reviews of the Wileyfox and Blu phones.
