Rather than being merely competitive with leaders like Google Drive, Dropbox, and iCloud, Amazon has decided to undercut their pricing by more than half. In some cases, much, much more.
Amazon’s Unlimited Everything plan means that you now can stash all of your digital stuff in your own private Amazon cloud locker for $60 per year.
So for about £40 a year (if the prices convert directly), you can back up all your computers remotely to the cloud.
Just wow.

Regardless of price just how secure is cloud storage?
I'm guessing that The Grauniad hasn't stored all the Snowden stuff anywhere cloud based.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary
I use drop box free to store recent photos for family to look at, still back them up to usb hard drives and DVDs, but don't pay for extra storage as it's too expensive.
these Amazon offerings however are v tempting to back up all my photos as I take them.
not sure I'd keep super personal info there though, just in case, but I've been using Amazon for donkey's years with no problem (AFAIK).

I think that's the thing. I would say your storage is pretty secure from other users and hackers (well, as secure as they are on your PC at home). But from government spying? Quite a lot less so I'd say.
With backup utils like Duplicati, that encrypt your data, it should be pretty safe. I'm sure more options will become available in time, too.

Call me paranoid, but I'd never, ever trust my personal data to a cloud. We found out recently Annie's newish tablet had automatically uploaded every picture she's taken to a google drive she never realised she's signed up for.
Deleted everything, snotty email sent, external 1tb hdd purchased.

If it's an Android tablet I'm surprised you didn't realise that it was doing that, as that I thought was one of their key feautures, that stuff is stored in the cloud, so you can get it from any device anywhere, in theory ;)
My phone is set to upload photos to dropbox, and google+ which I think is handy, and saves copying them to a computer manually.
another advantage of cloud, is that you're backing up stuff there, and they're backing it up again.
what happens if your external hdd drive dies, or you get burgled :(
Obviously you can't cater for all possible events

Or your house burns down! Or your tablet gets dropped and breaks (good luck getting any photos back off a smashed unit). Or someone steals it when you take it outside the house.
I think there is a significant difference to companies like Apple/Google/Amazon storing your data in the cloud and the likes of Facebook/Google tracking and mapping your browsing behaviour.

quite tempted for backing up all my photos as I take, them, I regularly have to delete from dropbox as I take so many of the girls, (I don't pay for dropbox) and would get the free p&p back then :)

They've probably done this in response to Google, who have been offering free unlimited photo storage for a while (images up to 16 megapixels). The android Photo app is excellent as well.

got an email today from amazon about storage plans....
Quote:
Amazon now offers an unlimited online storage plan in place of our prior plans, which offered tiered levels of storage. Our new Unlimited Storage plan lets you store as many videos, photos, documents, and other files as you like.
What happens to my current plan?
The new unlimited plans have replaced all previous storage plans, including the free 5 GB plan. All of your stored photos, videos, and files are still accessible in Amazon Drive, but you will need to start a three-month free trial of the Unlimited Storage plan to upload more files to your account.
