RE: [VIDEO] New Microsoft Tablet (Surface)

There`s already a user group started up at www.surfaceforums.net, spun off from www.transformerforums.com.

I still think the price point will be the battleground.  Looking at the two devices, I think the Pro could actually be priced out of the market if they`re aiming it at the Ultrabook market.  $1000 (equating inevitably to £1000 this side of the puddle) is frankly going to put it out of business.  You`d have to have more money than sense.

I think the RT version could be the one that sells, but it`ll have to be cheaper than equivalents like the £499 mid-range iPad, or the top end Android devices.  Suggestions are around $599 (which again will translate to £599 for rip-off Britain) which I think won`t encourage buyers.  Neither will confusion about what-software-will-run-on-which-device.  Proper x86/x64 software won`t run on the ARM machine and ARM apps won`t run on the Pro.  They`ll have to find some painless way of explaining that to buyers or finding some work around otherwise they`ll end up alienating buyers and losing future customers.

I`ve got to say, having worked with a couple of Android devices and iOS devices I`m itching to get my hands on a different OS as neither of the mobile OSes have been half-way decent for integration with my ordinary (Windows) kit.  The only bit of kit I have that I can say I`m reasonably happy with is my old Windows Mobile PDA which has its own annoying foibles, but works with my laptop or netbook without farting around with wireless synchronisation or files flagging up as suspect because the app screws some security setting.  I`m hoping somewhere along the line I can get my hands on my dream portable-device for spur-of-the-moment-jotting-down-ideas.

If not, I`m going back to paper pad and biro.

Lol! I like the way he carries on as if nothing is wrong whilst hiding the tablet from the cameras until he eventually gives up and swaps it for another.

Actually the sign of a good Demonstrator/Public speaker that if you didn`t *see* the tablet freeze and if he didn`t need to go showing the screen on the next lot he just might have gotten away with it.

He probably didn`t give up, he probably just kept his "flow" to the next point he could break from the dialogue to grab the spare.

A really good demonstrator knows to throw the original machine over his shoulder and pick up the spare while carrying on as if nothing happened.

Just under a month to the expected launch date of this thing and the release of Windows 8.  I`ve still got high hopes for the Surface in spite of falling for the Nexus 7.

Steve Ballmer has been talking about an $300-800 pricing window for the Surface and Surface Pro.  He`s an idiot if he prices that high.  After everybody`s been whispering about a $199 price point for the Surface, they`ll be pushing it expecting $299.

Microsoft Surface pricing to undercut Apple`s iPad

whay are you shocked at £399? I`m not in the market myself for one, but the pro with keyboard case does look like a good machine. I`m surprised at the Uk pricing, I thought the $499 would be more than £399 with the current exchange rate and usual UK mark up. (I know it`s a £100 markup)

£310, or better £299 would have made a much more appealing device - half way between the Nexus 7 (£199) and the iPad.  The fact you have to add another £100 for the Touch case doesn`t improve matters.

The Pro (running Windows 8 rather than RT) will be nearer £800.

Hmm,  i had assumed this would be running standard windows 8, but it looks like it`s actually a custom ARM version, & is running on an Nvidia Tegra chipset, meaning normal windows .exe`s will not work :(  to me that kind of defeats the object of having a windows tab ? the only positive is that someones sure to hack it into an android tab eventually...  but for me, this is now a none starter :(

The Pro (running Windows 8 rather than RT) will be nearer £800.

any idea which chipset this will be running ?  i`m assuming it`ll be x86 or x64 ?
