RE: PC PSU Problem?

d'oh, just used the search to look up PSU issues, and this thread came up :(

yesterday afternoon, the PC mentioned above with the corsair PSU switched itself off, today it won't switch on :( the ethernet cable lights up as does an LED on the mobo.

if I unplug it, plug it in again, hit the power button on the front, I see the PSU fan, and processor fan move a tiny bit, and stop :( I tried unplugging everything, but still no joy, so looks like another PSU failure :(

found the ezcool, plugged that into the mobo (nothing else attached, it started up, and processor fan span, so I guess it's the PSU. Damn, hardly use this PC now, so not sure if it's worth spending whatever a good PSU costs these days, or just stick the ezcool in, and hope it doesn't go bang ;)

had a worry when I started up the pc with the ezcool, and a CPU fan error message came up, then I realised one of the loose cables was stopping the fan spinning, so tied it up with a cable tie, and so far so good, played some 300mb movie files off dvds in each of the drives, and has now been playing a 5gb video file from the hdd, so a promising start :)

if it goes wrong, I'll take out the 8800gts, put in the 7300 that came with the pc, and if need be the basic psu that came with it, then if that goes wrong stick to the onboard, and if then it goes wrong, scrap heap, I don't think any of the parts are worth anything on eBay, I guess I could stick it next to the PII450 up in the loft :)

good job I didn't replace the PSU, have been using that pc again daily now I can get to, and need to use the desk in the "spare room", but today the display went all funny, kind of artefacting on the bios screen, then in won't go into Mint :( so took out the graphics card, and used the onboard (nvidia 6100 it's a bit poo :( ) and it work so tomorrow I have the fun of trying to find what I did with the 7300 that came with the pc (it's in the loft I think, hopefuly in the old tower that was part of this pc, which is hopefuly in a bin bag with a big label on it) to see if that's better :(

Troubleshooting hardware problems is such a pain, I feel for you.

it's also getting that time spent and money spent balance right ;)

it' s obviously not worth spending more money on such an old PC, but is it worth spending the time fixing it when I could just put the HD in a caddy and use in another PC or laptop I have?

I guess i can put PC maintenace training in my JSA form ;)

I hate PCs (or should that be I love to hate PCs?)

found the graphics card in the loft, that was the quick and easy bit, plugged it in started it up, monitor wouldn't detect, still used on board, unplugged everything again, plugged it all in again, and now it's working. maybe I should get ready to make sure everything that's only on this PC isn't only on this pc in /home.

while in the loft I saw a box labelled PII450, brought a tear to my eye, never had this much trouble with that PC ;) (I know that's a lie, but as well as wearing a head torch I had rose tinted glasses on :) )

I remember having those earlier batch Celeron 300As you could overclock easily, memories. ;)

And my Abit BP6 dual processor motherboard, back when that was the only way you could get two cores. I think I came across these things whilst clearing out the loft before I moved down here.

Probably even came across a VESA Local Bus card, the standard before PCI took over. A lot went to the recycling centre over those few months.
