AntiVirus test reports 2010/Q3

Worth checking to make sure what you use is good or not.

http://www.av-test.org/certifications.php

McAfee: Internet Security 2010/2011
Microsoft: Security Essentials 1.0
Norman: Security Suite 8.0

All FAILED to be granted certification. Quite surprised at McAfee, never heard of Norman (don`t confuse it with Norton), MSE looks to be very weak too.

Surprising that as I moved all my PCs across to MSE and if I remember correctly a lot of people on here recommended it too!

Don`t / Didn`t you use it RJS?

So what free setup are people running/recommending now?!

Never used it, Avira fan myself.

I think I suggested MSE as well (sort of combined) and possibly as a better than nothing thing, but not sure I`ve ever recommended it as a sole source of protection. :o

I find if MSE detects something it is very good at removing it. Though I haven`t exactly tried to get anything nasty to find out.

RJS Quote - only going on about it as your recommendations on stuff like this carry more weight than other random people recommending AV products!  I could of swore in a thread once you said you were impressed with it and started using it!  Probably have my wires crossed!

I came across another thread when I found that quote where most people on here Ogster / XFG and a few others were recommending it to everyone.  Looking at the 3 month results for MSE it looks like it`s slowly getting worst.

There`s one on the list though that gets 2.5 yet is still certified as it got 6 for Useability taking it over 12 points...

God that sucks. I have MSE and Avast running and I`ve been happy with both.

On the Win 7 table MSE gets 4/6 for protection and 4.5 for repair. Avast gets 3.5 and 4. The best on 7 is Panda which is 5.5 and 5.5.

Has anyone here had problems while running MSE?

I`ve been running MSE on a netbook, 2x laptops and a desktop with no issues.

My parents use one of the laptops for downloading all these trial games etc... and it`s full of cr*p plus they constantly fall for clicking on some of these pop ups and their laptop appears fine... I`m going to double check when I get time as that report is a bit worrying.

I may have been impressed with it, but only in the context of it being a Microsoft product. Apologies if I ever gave the impression I`d rely on it, or use it as my only source of AV.

I have however on occasions ran it alongside Avira, it isn`t rubbish, I just don`t trust it enough to be my only source. As XFG says on Windows 7 it passes, though McAfee fails on both. I would expect Vista to be similar to Windows 7.

So to clarify, my current (100% free) recommendations in the AV world (still) are...

Avira Antivirus Personal Edition
and if you are very paranoid run MSE on top.

i used to be a big fan of AVG, but had issues with it getting more bloated with every update :(  & have tried avast/avira + a couple of other free ones,  but there was allways something on each one that bugged me lol...  but MSE has been excellent, & to date have never had any issues with it at all,  i also do fairly regular online scans with a couple of different AV`s  which never find anything MSE missed.. (panda & trend)

thats on XP.

I use Avast free on the main pc where XP is only used for games (runs zonealarm as well)
free comodo is used on the old PII 450 running xp (comodo firewall as well)
laptop win 7 MSE and zonealarm i think

I don`t go to dodgy site on the Win machines, use Linux for that ;)

I used to use AVG as well, but stopped a few years ago due to its Norton like bloat, although I hear Norton at home isn`t bloaty like it was.

I switched to MSE on the laptop, as I don`t use it very much, just a bit of surfing now and again, and had heard it was good and lightweight.

I`ve not had any problems on any of my machines virus related

I`d recommend windows users as well as AV use sites mentioned in this thread which do real time scans

on a regular basis
