Purple Rain (Remastered and Expanded)...

Have to say, this sounds really good and I'm only on The Beautiful Ones so far.

Can't wait to get to the demos and 12" mixes...

Did you get the 4 disc edition? I didn't realise until it turned up on Friday that the live disc was a DVD!

I had a lot of the remixes/edits already, but I'm hoping to spend some time today listening to the main album and see how it differs from the original.

Well, I had no choice really as the 3 disc mp3 version was £16.99 and the 4 disc physical copy was £17 bang on, and I got an auto rip with it anyway.

Thought it better to have what seems to be considered one of his greatest performances on disc than not, despite some reviews stating that the picture is a poor VHS copy but the sound is apparently good - wouldn't mind a rip of this...

I'm sure he's changed the tone and sound of the album, you know.  It sounds much clearer and much more electronic to me.  About half way through Disc 2 at the moment...

A lot of moaning over on Prince.org about the remastering of disc 1 just being louder and destroying the dynamic range:
http://prince.org/msg/7/443892/Purple-Rain-Deluxe-OUT-NOW?&pg=1

Joshua Welton was the "sound engineer" on disc 1, who produced his recent albums and is taking a lot of the flack.

I saw an interesting documentary on BBC4 about how popular music changing over the years is partly due to the equipment we listen on, old wireless radios and early record players made certain types of music easier to enjoy, then when cars became a major place of listening music changed to suit, and so on.

Now with most people listening on phones and less people being hi-fi nuts, the audience has changed again.

So maybe that's why they remastered it louder. I bought it for all the other discs anyway so I don't really care, I still have the original CD and a copy on vinyl. ;)

(I couldn't wait to get away from vinyl!)

I like it, the synth and percussion in particular sound much more prominent...

I'm sure I read somewhere that Prince was overseeing the remaster, so it can't be that bad.

It might just be how our tastes change over time and he preferred upping the volume on some things, and some people just wanted something that sounded exactly like the original but better, which is possibly impossible.

Guess I'll find out later. :)

Listened to it yesterday, started comparing it a bit today (with WinAmp's replay gain keeping the volumes the same) and I can't say if it's better, or if it's worse, it's just ever so slightly different in places.

If I switch between the two I can hear slight differences, but nothing that makes me want to listen to one over the other.

It's probably all completely irrelevant anyway because any differences I can notice I suddenly don't over the sound of my own voice singing along. :)

I found that listening to it through my phone headphones that I had to turn the volume down a tad as the sound got distorted in places, that probably has done my ears a favour though...

my missus took the girls to get hair cuts this morning, while waiting "When Doves Cry" came on the radio, one of them started dancing to it in the hair dresser's window :) Such is the power of Prince :)

But did they notice the lack of bass on that track?
