Ticket botting to be banned in US

Quote:
Congress has passed legislation to US President Barack Obama that would crack down on bots that buy batches of tickets online before humans.

Such software sometimes means that concert and theatre tickets sell out in minutes.

Using these programs is an "unfair and deceptive practice", the legislation says.

It was approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday and passed by the Senate last month.

Not sure how well this will work, it still won't stop armies of students being paid to scalp... but at least someone is trying somewhere.

As you say at least they are trying.
There's a lot more could be done as apparently Glastonbury have practically done away with secondary markets.

How have they managed that?

When I saw Radiohead at the O2, they had a system where they checked your card details at the door, if you didn't buy the tickets, you didn't get in. They also offered refunds for people who couldn't make it.

I think it's a combination of credit card and uploading a picture.

There is an attempt by a Conservative MP to bring in, I think, a private member's bill to look at addressing touts in the UK.

Saw an interview on Daily Politics a couple of weeks ago...see if I can dig out some info...

*EDIT* Here we go (turns out was a select committee): http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/culture-media-and-sport-committee/news-parliament-2015/ticket-abuse-secretary-state-letter-16-17/

The Harry Potter play uses a similar system to Radiohead on the door. Plus random selections from the ticket website queue, so being the first to hit the site wont guarantee you a ticket any more than the last person in the queue.

And I believe Iron Maiden are planning on the same credit card check on the door on the next tour.

When I did the Ultravox tour a few years back I had to present my card when picking the tickets up at the box office, but I guess that's standard for box office tickets, no?

Hamilton brings in paperless ticketing system to combat touts:

So same as Harry Potter and Radiohead, wish more would do this!

Aye standard. Unless that was the only way you could pick them up?

On a related note, I have tickets for Midge Ure's Something from Everything tour in April. Some acts you don't have to worry about ticket touts for!

a colleague is seeing Iron Maiden and that's ticketless, he only realised this when he wondered why his tickets hadn't arrived yet :)

Wouldn't have taken you for a Midge Ure fan, Rob - but well in...
