Gold plated optical leads

RJS (undefined) posted this on Saturday, 5th December 2015, 14:42

Just looking for cheap optical TOSLINK cables because despite being convinced I had about 4 or 5 of them lying around I now seem to have none despite knowing I used to have loads and currently not using any of them...

And I discover on ebay they sell them gold plated!!!!

Lol?

What would the gold plating do? I suppose it's a trap for idiots. Shiny thing good.

Somewhere else (on Reviewer I think) there was some research proving that the expensive gold plated, shiny must haves are no better than the cheapest bargain bin ones you can find.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Yep. They transit a signal via electrical conductivity, if it's metal, it'll work. The particular metal used plays no part. The overall lifespan of the leads themselves might increase with a higher grade of metal (inc gold plate), but on a day to day basis there's no difference

Rob, I was in Tesco tonight and had a wonder over to the cables looking for a toslink. I was after a 3m but they only went as high as 2m so Amazon it is. Anyway the 2m jobs were reduced to £3 and seemed decent quality if your after something quick.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'd already ordered one off ebay and realised I had one in my laptop bag (for my laptop ironically!). :)

Aye, they just reduce corrosion. Though quite what corrosion on a plastic toslink connector you can reduce beats me.

That's the audio world for you, as the saying goes, if you spend a lot of money on a cable you'll make sure you hear the difference.

Years back some Muso or other told me Musicians (particularly classical) were known for having shi**y Hi Fis as they  heard the performance with their brain rather than their ears.

Gold plating can make a difference regarding oxidisation but makes next to no difference in general.  As for its use in optical cables, it's 100% pointless as there's no electrical signal being transmitted.
