Audio grade ethernet cables

Remember these?

The thousands of dollar ethernet cables which supposedly (according to the marketing blurb and no actual science) improve the audio quality of digital playback?

The ones some audiophiles (sigh) actually believe improve the quality of the sound?

Ars and the JREF are going to put them to the test:

After several e-mail and Twitter discussions with a bunch of different audiophiles—including Michael Lavorgna who initiated what turned out to be a very courteous exchange of e-mails—it became pretty obvious that the folks who believed in this kind of thing really believed in it. The best way to dig into it seemed to be to bring in an outside expert.

And...

This isn’t the first time the JREF has taken on audiophile-grade cables. In 2007, the foundation offered its Million Dollar Challenge prize to the Pear Cable Company if the company could prove its $7,250 audio cables improved sound quality as advertised. The Pear Cable Company declined the offer. This time, we’re bringing the cables ourselves, so the test will happen regardless of the feelings of the OEM.

This has an interesting implication for the results of our on-stage listening test. It turns out that we weren’t testing the expensive AudioQuest cable against a standard Cat6 Ethernet cable—we were testing it against a really terrible, noisy, spec-failing garbage-quality Ethernet cable.

And listeners still failed to hear any difference.

Who'd have thought it.

Don't I recall the same bol**cks about HDMI cables though to a lesser price difference.
I seem to recall the likes of PC World/Currys sales winkles telling folk that they needed the ones they sold at about four times the price you could get them on Ebay.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

standard practice isn't it, not just DSG, but in RIchersounds I've had staff to try to sell me expensive HDMI cables, due to the markup on them :(

Yep, like those £90 Monster HDMI cables that don't offer any improvement over any other cables of reasonable build quality, the latter of which cost as little as a few pounds.
