The difference between the Fire Tv & the Fire Tv stick is for the most part if you want to play games. The link shows the difference between the two.

I have both Amazon units but as I use them mainly for streaming Amazon Prime I haven't noticed any difference. I don't use the voice command which seems to be the other difference.

Got exactly the same email last night. Cheeky gits. I used that a lot as well as it worked faultlessly with my crappy broadband.

I have used a workaround that allows you to stream Prime video via a Chromecast but is a bit of a faff as you still need to run Chrome on a separate computer.

I think I'm going to have to get it for that price. Amazon 1 Me 0.

If it makes you feel better, I think they were selling them at cost for the retail price. Probably making a small margin now they've made so many, but I doubt they are making anything at all at £39 for the non-stick one.

You can also apparently hack it and put XBMC on it (or Kopi as its called now?) as long as you don't update the firmware. So when its no good for Amazon TV anymore...

So after having this for a week my initial thoughts are...

...well worth the £39 if you watch Amazon TV or iPlayer, it's just so much faster than the Smart TV I have for both. And having digital out is a real bonus, no more horrible stereo whilst watching Mad Men.

Wakes up instantly like a tablet, and the voice search is handy too, without the creepy issue of it listening in on you (needs you to press and hold a button).

Do you think it is a good alternative to Sky?, as I have had yet another increase in monthly payments, the 3rd in 3 years, and thinking of packing them in.

No, not really. Most of the TV shows they carry are not current series.

Not really sure it's a real alternative to Sky...

If you have a £79 a year Prime account you'll have access to a lot of streaming content: All the big shows that come out on Sky Atlantic, Fox, Netflix, etc., do make their way onto Prime, so you'll always get to see Game of Thrones, True Detective, House of Cards - all the biggies. HOWEVER,  you'll have a nice long wait for them, maybe up to a year after originally airing. Titles are available a lot earlier if you want to pay a rental charge.

Amazon have their own original shows too, which includes Extant - currently showing the 2nd season, which of course is available straight away on Prime long before is gets to Sci Fi (or whatever Sky channel it was shown on).

You can always use the free 30 day trial to give it a go. Same goes with Netflix as another alternative.
