Hackable firmware for Samsung DVD-M105 now online...

Mike G (Elite) posted this on Monday, 29th October 2001, 19:24

I`ve recently borrowed a UK Samsung DVD-M105 and have dumped the firmware from it. This is version 5.02C, which is hackable using the standard Samsung remote hack, detailed here:

http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/full/thomson3300.asp

The firmware is now up on my site, so if you have access to a programmer, you can download and write this file to a new EPROM chip. Hope this is of help to those of you struggling with v5.02E :-)

P.S. My Samsung firmware site is at http://www.709firmware.fsnet.co.uk/

Mike, just out of curiosity (know a fair bit about firmware from my dealing with Sampo players) do Samsung players not work on the same basis as Sampo players - ie can you not just flash the EEPROM on the player with a CD-R with the firmware on (Sampo`s pretty much all run with flashable 29F040 PLCC EEPROM chips). Do the Samsung firmware files come as .rom files, or is it some other system ?

(Apologies for confusing the hell out of everyone else - purely technical question, like I really know what I`m talking about !!!)

I`m afraid there`s no possibility of flashing Samsung firmware, Clayts. The firmware is stored in bog standard, UV-erasable EPROM chips (27C801, DIP version), so you have to physically remove the chip from the player, erase it by exposing to UV light, program the new firmware in, and replace the chip.

It`s annoying because the decision to go with EPROM must have saved Samsung pennies (if anything), and Flash would have really simplified the upgrade process.

As for the files, they are in ordinary binary format (i.e. an exact, byte for byte copy of the chip contents) with extension .bin.

Any idea where I can buy an EPROM chips (27C801, DIP version). I`ve had a look online and can`t find any. Is it essential to use this particular
EEPROM for the samsung?

Yeah - interesting and confusing ;-)

BTW dig0, you can buy the 27c801 chip from Maplin Electronics - http://www.maplin.co.uk - the part number is AX58N, price £9.99. You can use a 27c080 instead, if you like.

Hi Mike,

I bought a Samsung M-205 DVD Player last month, it has firmware 5.02E and CANT be hacked. Can u please tell me if the 5.02C version you have dumped will work fine with my M205 (Cause it says its for M105)?? Will it do it any damage?? Thanks in advance.

Yes, it will work fine - M105 and M205 use the same firmware.

Hi,

By the way, Mike G. If I buy an eprom chip (27c801), and program it, what do I put to protect the chip? The original one has a sticker, but does the one at maplins have one? I wouldn´t want my chip to be erased. Thanks in advance
