Voter ID

Govt have just released what is acceptable as voter ID.

If you didn't already know, the Tories have declared that you now need photo ID to vote despite the fact that it has been proven that actual voter fraud through personation (as it is called) is less than negligible. The argument they are using is that it gets rid of the 'perception' that voting could be tampered with.

https://bylinetimes.com/2022/11/07/voter-id-its-far-worse-than-any-us-state/

The truth is that it's a blatant attempt at voter suppression: younger and lower income people, including ethnic minorities, are more likely to have a left-leaning voting bias, whereas older people have a more right-leaning bias. Younger/poorer people are less likely to have photo ID and being of working age and with young families are time poor and less likely to go to the trouble/expense of arranging an ID. Time rich and generally better off older people are more likely to have ID and have the time to arrange to get it if they don't.

The list of acceptable ID has now been announced and - what a surprise - it favours ID held by older people whilst not accepting common ID held by younger people e.g. a senior persons railcard is acceptable by not a 16-25 yr old railcard.

Just like the Republican party in the US, the far right have taken over the Tory party over here. Hopefully enough of the centre right can take it back from them before we plunge further down this populist hell hole.

Currently in free fall with an inoperative chute.

Tempted to use my FAC just for the chuckle.

"FAC?"

Sorry.
Thought I'd referred to my past time enough before and it's easy to assume people know, is it acronyms, you're familiar with.
Firearms Certificate

thought I'd bump this as local elections coming up, email from my local council:
Quote:
Local elections on 4 May: The way you vote is changing

The Government has introduced a requirement for voters to show photo ID when voting at a polling station at some elections. This new requirement will apply for the first time on Thursday 4 May 2023, when local elections take place

You may already have a form of photo ID that is acceptable. You can find a list on our website. For more information on which forms of photo ID will be accepted, you can also visit the Electoral Commission website or call 0800 328 0280.

If you don’t already have an accepted form of photo ID or your ID no longer looks like you, you can apply for a free voter ID document known as a Voter Authority Certificate. You can do this online, or by completing a paper application and returning it to us, by 25 April 2023.

Or you may find it easier to vote by post or proxy, which don’t require you to provide photo ID. The deadline to apply for a post or proxy vote is Tuesday 18 April 2023

I'll mention it to my parents tomorrow, but I can just imagine them, and other elderly ppl turning up:

driving license please.

dad, gets out wallet, pulls out a 60+ yr old piece of paper that falls apart a little bit more

sorry sir, that's not valid, do you have a passport?

dad goes home to gets passport, him and mum spend half a day finding where they put them "safe", it expired years ago, which is fine, but decide, they really can't be bothered to go back again to polling station :(

I'm 99% sure the old guy next door won't have any photo ID, and if i say I'll help him get the free online one, I know his response will be "f them, if they don't want me to vote blah blah blah" :(
