Bunting?

Just curious how much bunting, flags etc there are around your areas.
I'm just back in from work and it's really quiet all over. A city which was red as far as the eye could see with flags and banners for the footie, practically nothing for Mrs Windsor
I wouldn't need both hands to count the houses I've seen with any jubilee stuff displayed and the restaurants and bars locally could just as well be under another lockdown.

I took the kids to a jubilee picnic at one of the local parks this morning, there was quite a lot of ppl there, but you'd expect a lot of ppl there anyway on a sunny bank holiday or weekend.

it's a 15 min walk away, but like you,  there was only a handful of houses we passed on the way which had a lot of decorations out

similarly, a lot more round Euros or world cup. Maybe Saturday there will be more when there's street parties?

I had a bottle of M&S / Elgood's brewery Jubilee ale, £3.00 for a 660ml bottle and v nice it was, hoping they have loads left next week so knock em down to half price :) But that's as far as my flag waving goes :)

I suppose this thread is really bouncing around the idea of how royalist we are or are not in this country now. The polls indicate that their overall popularity is waning.

I'm fairly neutral on the Royals - maybe slightly more anti than pro. I can see the obvious anachronisms and unfairness, the ludicrous deference to our 'betters', but I'm not too keen on a presidential system to replace them and culturally we are just so used to them. I suspect they will evaporate away with time, particularly when Liz goes.

I noticed some article doing the twitter rounds (possibly in the Irish Times?) mocking our deference to and obsession with the Royals, but the sanctimonious smugness of the piece did prick my irritation. All cultures/societies have their oddities - not forgetting that Ireland w***s itself into a stupor when the Pope deigns a visit.

I also suspect that a good many people in this country simply like a good excuse for a celebration and aren't particularly Royalist. I like Christmas and Easter. I'm still an atheist.

I asked the question because I was genuinely surprised at the apparent lack of interest, at least visibly.
I suspect you're right that's it as much to do with the monarchy as religion has to do with Christmas these days.

My own position is I'd rather have rights than owe allegiance but I'm certainly not suggesting marching them out into Buck house garden and going Russian on them.

They will still be there as the tourist trap soap opera even if or when we are no longer a monarchy.
