I get that totally but I've heard way worse at these events.
If I go to such a place and someone makes a joke at my wife's 'expense' then, no matter what the reason, if I get up and smack them then I ain't sitting back down and seeing the rest of the show that's for sure. Imagine getting up and assaulting a comedian and nothing else happens. No, neither can I.

some of the comments from various comedians have been quite funny about it, saying they'd have to cut a lot of their jokes out for risk of getting punched, but I think it was Jason Mansford who made the point that we teach our kids not to resort to violence when someone says mean things.

however David Baddiel made me laugh

As a comedy moment it’s still not up there with a member of the audience at Montreal Just For Laughs 1991 punching Jerry Sadowitz out cold for opening with “Hello moose-f***ers.”

Jim Carrey saying if it was him in an interview about Sonic 2 he'd be suing for $200m was funny,  but i think he was being serious?

Feels timely to wheel this out.

It would have been like that scene in Airplane, where the passengers lined up to smack the hysterical woman, if Ricky had hosted the Oscars, or let’s call them the Slappys.

Alternative timelines...

  1. Chris Rock doesn't make the joke, nothing happens
  2. Chris Rock makes the joke, Jada and Will's expressions show they didn't find it remotely funny, media generally debates if the joke was unacceptable or not
  3. Chris Rock makes the joke, Will reacts badly to it and slaps Chris Rock, oh look this is our one!

In every one of these timelines, the media is talking about different things, and two of them turn out to be a really bad few days for Jada.

I've seem people on Twitter saying, "Look what Gervais said about Mel Gibson and he didn't punch him", which feels a lot like it's missing the point. The sad thing about all of this for me, is the only two things that make this joke okay to make are...

  • Chris Rock and Jada are close enough friends for it to be okay to joke about it
  • Jada had done something to deserve having this sort of joke made about her
I'm not sure either of these is true, so for me this becomes punching down, and I don't like people punching down.

or Chris Rock didn't know about her condition? Ignorance could be an excuse if he assumed it was a fashion statement.

I know it's not a good idea to say to a lady with a bit of a belly "when is it due"? but ppl still say that.

I know it's a tabloid, but there's a bit of the history of Rock and the Smiths in this article.

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/smith-chris-rocks-previous-argument-26573658

They were friendly enough for photo-ops at one point, but Rock has history when it comes to cracking wise about the family Smith.

The thing is that this is the Oscars, it's scripted and rehearsed down to the wire. The other controversy this year was an Amy Schumer skit with Kirsten Dunst, about professional seat warmers at award shows. The serial cancellers and the permanently offended filled up social media to the point where Schumer had to make a statement that the moment was scripted, and Dunst was in on the gag.

Gervais is on record as saying that he wouldn't do the Oscars as he wouldn't be allowed to say what he wanted, which all makes me think that Chris Rock joke, lame and unkind though it was, was written by someone else. I don't think it was an adlib. The Academy has said that it's conducting an inquiry into Will Smith's actions, they haven't said that they're looking at Rock straying off-script. Besides, GI Jane? A 25 year old film, that hardly anyone watched, and flopped hard according to Wikipedia. I doubt anyone remembers it, except industry insiders and Hollywood folk, who the joke was obviously aimed at.

I think it's infamous, like Showgirls, for being bad, and the only thing I, and probably a lot of people know about it is Demi Moore had her head shaved, and so gets mentioned any time a female celebrity has her head shaved, actually probably 50/50 split with Britney.

On the plus side, I guess ppl are talking about alopecia which I only know about from Duncan Goodhew, Matt Lucas and Gail Porter, I guess only our older members will be familiar with 2 of those names :) My missus didn't know Jada Pinket had it until this nonsense.

I mean that would be a defensible reason, whilst also being quite surprising to not know.

she may have consoled herself with one of her other 'partners' - the subject of which has also been the butt of others hosts' talk.

RJS, I seemed to think for some reason you are a Jimmy Carr fan(?) - who certainly roasts many in and out of the audience.  Does Jada deserve 'special' treatment because of her fame - as her husband certainly appears to be getting it due to his.
I suppose it's a bit ironic that Will Smith himself seemed to find it funny - until, I assume, he saw his wife didn't.
