Death Penalty

Been thinking about adding this thread for years tbh I am a liberal in pretty much all things but the death penalty I have been in favour of for years. I mean when you think of couples murdering young women for years, Doctors killing patients for years, and lately Police officers using their warrant cards to kidnap, rape and murder a woman who should have been able to feel safe in those circumstances and terrorist wanting to bomb a maternity hospital.

I feel for things like killing police officers, children, terrorist attacks and for me pedophiles who have been doing it for a period of time I think should be put down like a rabid dog, when a dog kills someone its put down quite rightly, if terrorists want to blow themselves up then we should be more than happy to. oblige them when they f*** it up and the people who help them should be made to realise there will be the ultimate consequences  when they are found because currently jail doesn't seem like much of a deterrent  to them

I wonder how often it happens in USA, too many: wrong person found guilty?

Other than that, I see your point, but two wrongs don't make a right, mental health issues, etc, but I know what you mean, my reaction to certain crimes is 'hang em'

An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. An issue with the cases you highlight is the arrogance of those perpetrating the crimes - they believe they won't get caught, even with a plethora of evidence against them - so the death penalty isn't a deterrent. There's also the multiple incidences of people who were put to death and then found innocent of the crimes they were charged with.

I think America proves that it's not a deterrent, and injustice disproportionately affects the poor. I think it's just vengeance by another name, and that's never a good thing. :/

It's easy to get caught up in the anger, but I don't think this is much of a solution, those lie in prevention in the first place, but doing that is difficult, costs money, takes time, and requires changes in society to fix.

I do think there are certain crimes for which a death penalty would be appropriate. Murder, school shootings, terrorist acts etc. Not as a deterrent and not as revenge, but rather a way to simply delete the worst people from society.

HOWEVER

This could only exist in a magical fairytale land where the justice system always gets the right person. Which they clearly don't.

Also, I've read horror stories about botched executions where they used the wrong cocktail of drugs and left the subject in agony or even a vegetative state. So there would need to be some "humane" method of execution that always works perfectly 100% of the time.

But for the first reason alone, I'm against it.

also, who chooses/how do you choose which crimes deserve it?

then slippery slope to "3 strikes and you're out" ?

Regarding the botched executions thing, it does amuse me a little (wrong word but you know what I mean...) that they clean the needle/skin beforehand too.

There are times when I think the death penalty might just be deserved, when I think of murders like:

1. Lee Rigby
2. PC Andrew Harper
3. PC's Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes

Then I wonder about the wild west death row system in the US where there are massive injustices that lead to people being imprisoned for long periods for the smallest of offences or sentenced to death on the flimsiest of evidence.

I do believe our legal system is far superior to the US one, but I can't help feel that mistakes will still be made and people sentenced to death and executed for a crime they didn't commit.

Think about the death sentence and people like:

1. the Guildford four
2. the Birmingham six
3. the Bridgwater four
4. the M25 three
5. Derek Bentley
6. Judith Ward

I'm not comfortable with a society that is happy to sanction state-sponsored execution.  It's just wrong.

The idea that there are certain crimes which deserves the termination of the individual concerned I have no problem with.
No it wouldn't be a deterrent and doesn't necessarily have to be considered one, just the end of them would be fine. No further concern to anyone affected and no further expense to the taxpayer.

However I'm against it for the points made above.

I do not trust the legal system or in some instances those administering it.
There have been cases every year of people being locked up for long periods and then found innocent.
Many also in the past when we did have a death sentence, just Google Derek Bentley.
The legal system here and in the States seems mostly concerned with it's own survival which seems to depend on it's infallibility. Until it's proved fallible when it's too late to dig someone up once you've hung them.

As far as the most humane method, in my opinion hanging is by far the best option providing it's done expertly. If you haven't read Albert Pierrepoint's autobiography I recommend it.
The states in America that use injection have been having huge problems as the manufacturers of the drugs refuse to supply them if they have any suspicion that they are being used for that purpose.

EDIT: As also mentioned above where you draw the line of what is a capital offence will always be liable to movement.
No doubt Priti Patel would string someone up for the offence of being brown and on a boat.
