RIP actually a man who changed my life with my ZX 16k spectrum, never looked back
RE: RIP: Sir Clive Sinclair dies aged 81
He was basically like a tech rockstar when I was a kid - a balding, ginger, nerdy, speccy, mensa genius. Never quite found that killer tech to really change the world.
There was a pretty good drama made a few years back as I recall - I think Alexander Armstrong played Sinclair?

Farewell Uncle Clive.
ZX81 and Spectrum probably responsible for starting off 50% of senior tech professionals.
The truck drivers ashtray was a bit of a miss but he tried when nobody else did.

RIP Clive, the ZX-81 was the first computer I ever saw, and it fascinated me. We got our own soon after, and then a 16k rampack! BASIC was so slow, I had to learn machine code, I can still write Z80 code even now.
Definitely without that machine my fascination with computers would have come a few years later, and who knows what affect on my life that would have had.

held on with an elastic band as the pack was too heavy for the circuit board, and if you moved it even slightly, you lost the hour's worth of BASIC you were just working on
A gentle genius, will be sadly missed

Veritable genius who couldn't quite see things through. It seemed to always take someone else, or a further innovation to make his ideas work. The pocket calculator, the digital watch, and the pocket TV all needed the LCD to be viable (although we're happy to charge our smartwatches every night now). Can you image what the C5 could have been like with modern electric motors and lithium batteries? And the home computer really needed a proper keyboard.
Which makes the Spectrum the outlier, as it succeeded even with the rubber keys, with millions of units sold.
Typically when I was a kid, I usually got the opposite of what I asked for, and my disappointment was palpable when I got a 48k Spectrum instead of a Commodore 64. It didn't take long before I realised that it was just as capable at gaming, and maybe a little more in some genres, and it was a lot more user friendly when it came to BASIC programming. So much so that at the first opportunity, I upgraded to a 128k+.
I always wished that he'd held onto the Spectrum and not sold it to Amstrad, as the upgrade path stalled with Alan Sugar. His idea of upgrades was to keep the internals the same and just change the aesthetics. Instead we might have had something like the Next 20 years ago.

How about a jet engine? :)

It really stalled with Sinclair, the 128k only came about because Spain really wanted it, and Clive didn't like games at all, he was obsessed with electric bikes and the QL as a business machine. He basically thought the Spectrum was lost to gaming.

Probably my first upgrade was a keyboard you just stuck the speccy inside and re-plugged the relevant cable.
