That's a viewpoint, and the numbers suggest that the average increase in budget is below the average since the NHS started but the budget is still eyewatering.

https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/projects/nhs-in-a-nutshell/nhs-budget

On top of that, the NHS employs the most people in England with 1.2 million FTE (so the actual SIP may be nearer to 2 million, but without SIP figures it's hard to tell).

I still think social care needs nationalising and care workers subsumed into the NHS and paid on NHS payscales with qualified Sisters running care homes, so they have an NHS ethos running through them.

Nobody is likely to do this though, as not only will it cost a fortune, but no one appears to want their NI or income tax to rise.

I wouldn’t say that no-one wants to pay more tax , but when you have a government whose world beating track and trace system can’t find the money wasted on a world beating track and trace system…

Accusations of incompetence aside, any government that has to break a manifesto pledge should do the honourable thing and ask permission of the electorate, if not in a general election, then in a referendum. This govt has broken two pledges. The elderly will still get stiffed by care costs, as the moneys all going to the NHS, and they won’t get a pension rise either.

Disagree.  This is a pressing need that consecutive governments have all agreed to address and failed to.  This is as a result of COVID to address the serious flaws in social care and to address the NHS backlogs caused by shutting down most of the NHS.

He's increasing money to spend on the NHS, which is exactly what Rob was complaining about above.  Whether it will be effective or not is another issue, but you and I will have an opportunity to voice our opinion in 2024.  We won't know whether this move works until we see the results or lack therof.

So many people have made public virtue signals in the past about being willing to pay more in tax to fund the NHS, well those people now have their chance.

Besides, Gordon Brown has already won a court case to say that he didn't have to stick to manifesto promises.  That is petty, I agree, but hey...

Well this is excellent news and hopefully normal situation resumed:

Hopefully the scale of the drop worries the Conservatives and we start to get more thoughtful government.  If not, it's a long way to 2024...

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Does more to assure a conservative victory.
Labour will now think they can win.
Any idea of an alliance to get proportional representation will go from 'not a bloody chance' to 'Sod off, we smell power' from Labour before the Corbynistas wreck any election campaign.

You, of course, may well be right about that...

Very true, but such a substantial drop should hopefully give them pause for thought.

In other news, this was a tad unexpected:

I see #blockborisjohnson is trending on Twitter as complete idiots think he'll give a damn.

I saw someone who seemed to think it would drive him crazy...
