Social media boycott

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 1st May 2021, 13:13

Lots of clubs and organisations shutting down their social media in protest at the lack of action over racist and sexist abuse.
I don't count this as social media so much as it's really niche and Rob keeps us all in order and fends of the nutters anyway.

Wrighty and Shearer clip

I'm on twitter way too much anyway so I'm giving it a rest till the Monday night as well.
They are all quick enough off the mark when it affects their own bottom line so they should be capable of doing a lot more than they currently are.

I'd like to say it's unbelievable ppl say things like that still, quite shocking but power ful to see them have a conversation about it.

Sadly I think this media blackout is pointless, but I have no idea what they should/can do, short of turn up outside these people's houses late at night, but that's not a real long term solution.

I remember talking to an Indian friend, who said he mostly ignored it, he's a clever chap, but at uni here in England got called a "boatee" and worse. His parents sent him here from India to study. He said there's no educating these ppl, they are just ignorant, but that's the way they are :(

The action is meant to target the social media companies who should and could do far more to block and ban abusive users/content. They're quick and efficient enough to block 'copyright' infringement when that can cost them money.

The blackout is a huge loss of traffic for the sites which drives their ad revenue and sport related social media is particularly huge, not surprisingly.

It's well known that they make even more revenue when traffic is high - even if it's a torrent of abuse. The likes of twitter and facebook made huge amounts of money when the orange man was in the whitehouse because of all the extra traffic and they were happy for it to happen. They literally don't want to do anything so have to be strong-armed.
