You couldn't make this up... well you could do but nobody would believe you:

When an officer smashed in the window of Ryan Colaço’s car, after he was wrongly accused of concealing drugs, they did not know he was driving home from a TV interview in which he told of institutional racism in the police after being stopped and searched the week before.

They failed to mention that they were driving on the wrong side of the road & then didn't pull over until they reached their home.

I'll admit to not following this particularly closely but let's wait to hear the details as 'the wrong side of the road' was not mentioned to them during the stop. They only found out about it from Twitter.
They also claim they were driving down single width roads, which I would take to mean cars parked both sides and finding a gap if you had to pass another vehicle.

As an added fact, according to the Met's own stats you are four times more likely to be pulled over if you're black.

yes, the story has changed with more ambiguity, to make the story more interesting.

on the radio they had soundbit of police saying "wrong side of road" then you read about the road and it sounds liek where I live, i.e. it may as well be 1 way, as only 1 car can go up/down the road at one time.

There's also the talk about how the social media footage can be editted, but t least the POlice are saying they want to talk to her to see how this could have been handled differently.

When I was college age, I'd often get stopped by poilce walking home from pub late at night, I assume it was the long hair and leather jacket which did it. I remember one time, it was pouring with rain, and it was so difficult to stay calm and not be sarcastic, with the "Where have you been, where are you going" questions, as I just wanted to get home and dry.

On the other hand I remember a friend of mine lived out in the sticks, if his local bobby saw him late at night, he'd tell him to hop in the police car and he'd give him a lift him! He had to start to tell the copper to drop him a bit further up the road from his house as him mum thought he had een up to no good every time, and didn't believe him when he said the copper was being nice!

I think the problem is, the institution that is the police, are looking for any excuse to pull over people they think might be criminals. And if you think that the people you are pulling over are probably drug dealers or armed gang members, you are going to treat them differently from say someone who maybe is doing 35mph in a 30 limit.

This is what people mean when they talk about the police being institutionally racist. It may not be individual officers, it's a system.

I'm not sure what the answer to this is, but if I was black and constantly being pulled over for no justifiable reason rather than only having been pulled over once for no reason in 30 years, I would be more than fed up with someone just asking if we could talk this over so we handle this better next time, or launch yet another inquiry that nobody is going to act upon any results of.

Without constantly going into specifics and justifications, you either believe the vast majority of black people who say they experience constant 'othering' in UK/western society, or you don't. I choose to believe them.

If you don't want to believe them, you will easily find some ready made reasons why they deserved eveything they got.

John Amaechi does a rather good job of explaining 'white privilege' (with short video).

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zrvkbqt

Quote:
There's a good chance, as a white person watching this, your life is already hard. Every day you have to overcome some difficulty or challenge just to get by, but you can still have white privilege. White privilege doesn't mean you haven't worked hard or you don't deserve the success you've had. It doesn't mean that your life isn't hard or that you've never suffered. It simply means that your skin colour has not been the cause of your hardship or suffering.
