Coronavirus, anyone starting to get worried?

bandicoot (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 27th February 2020, 00:20

Well it started in China and now has a foothold in other places around the world, like Japan, South Korea, Iran, Italy, ect, so is the big breakout of this virus going to happen, and if so are you worried?

Going by China Statistics of casualties so far, its going to be dangerous to older people, like pensioners,  and those people with poor immune systems. For others, either it will be nothing or like a bad cold.

I see on Ebay there is a lot of buying of half face masks with filters, but will Westerners wear them, would you, if your life depended on it?

No.
Only 5% get critically ill and a 1% to 2% fatality rate.
For most it's a bad cold if that but hey it sells papers, fills media minutes and generates clicks.

i remember when SARS hit the news, the only reason I remember is 'cos I went to Taiwan with a group of friends with for a wedding as it hit the news. We spent a few days there, then Hong Kong for a few days.

Apparently Hong Kong ws less busy than normal, so we got some extra good deals on purchases, but still seemed busy to us!

When we got back, I phoned work, thy said come in as normal, 1 mate was given 2 weeks extra paid leave to stay at home!

So I guess this is worse than that, but hadn't changed what I've been doing, I wash my hands after going for a wee etc anyway :)

Btw, the face masks are pretty useless as defence

The media love showing pictures of ppl wearing them in China, Hong Kong etc, I did buy one while over there, but many ppl there wear them anyway, against pollution as well as disease.

I did wear it for a bit in Hong Kong, but my mates didn't, so I stopped as there seemed little point as we were sharing a room in hotel :)

Funny story. I work in a builder's yard, and a we have a whole section in the shop for PPE (personal protective equipment). We had a company-wide email a couple of weeks ago informing us of an unprecedented uptake in facemasks, predominately the fold-flat FFP2+FFP3 masks, and that we weren't to sell stupidly large numbers to single customers and that no discount was to be given.

Not 2 seconds after I'd read that email that a couple of Chinese chaps came into the shop and wanted to buy every single mask we had. We had 25 twin packs, I let them have 10. They offered me 5 times the normal selling price, cash in hand, but I refused. I've got integrity, dammit. Plus we've got cameras.

Interestingly though, I offered them multi-packs of 5, which worked out cheaper, but hey weren't interested, because they were moulded, not fold flat. (Better seal, apparently). It's moot anyway, as not only can you contract it via the eyeballs, but you have to be within 2 metres of an infected person for at least 15 minutes to catch it.

So no, not really worried in my little corner of the UK, but it's interesting to see the political shenanigans blowing up around it, and certain world 'leaders' kindergarten-esque response to it, both now and in the lead-up.

I think I would worry more if governments were taking it less seriously. Or I was older and less fit. :)

Definitely both of those, at least compared to you and I regularly refuse the flu shot.
Don't like taking anything I don't feel I need, I doubt it's efficacy and I'm not partial to needles.

To try and dodge the virus or the hysteria and disruption or both?
