[sarcasm]This is one government that has its head screwed on straight![/sarcasm]

Off licences added to list of essential traders. Concern was growing about booze running out on supermarket shelves...

I think that NHS staff were feeling out of sorts with the traditional Friday night stomach-pump crowd not there.

maybe it's cos they sell fags as well?

if ppl can't buy fags and booze, then how will the government get any money coming in to pay for the NHS?

it's good, more ppl buying booze in offy, means less ppl in supermarket :)

when i was in supermarket at the weekend, in the alcohol section, all the cheap lager, cider, and cheap vodka were gone, but premium spirits, craft beers still stocked up :) I guess the ppl buying all the loo roll are buying up the stella and fosters as well.

I think this is probably the reason, although newsagents mostly still sell ciggies so... not sure.

as if the blue light services havent enough to deal with the virus... lets just allow people to drink too much as well!

People will turn to drink in their homes if the pubs are shut, which they are, plus it is needed if you have to live 24/7 next to your nagging wife

Sobering graphs and data on that site.

Also, if you switch the graph to total cases in the UK and view it as a logarithmic scale, we should have been going into lockdown around the start of March.

I know that would have been incredibly unpopular, and trying to get enough of the public to understand how log scales work would have been hard, but since when was leadership meant to be easy.

I have that chart permanently open as a tab...

Notice that we've only recently 'overtaken' S.Korea in total cases, yet they have far fewer deaths. In reality, they do far more testing than we do, so we probably have far more cases than they do. Because of their experiences with SARS, they know what they are doing: high number of testing, tracing back each case history to catch all those who may be infected. Painstaking and resource heavy but effective. Didn't hear any crap about herd immunity from them.

We are almost certainly heading towards Italy/Spain levels in coming weeks and probably far stricter isolation. Does look like it's working in Italy, finally.

Sweden has went down the route of no lockdown, unlike other countries. Business as usual, keep the economy going, though social distances are imposed. Tell the sick to stay indoors.

It will be interesting to see if this will have more or less percentage deaths per population compared to countries on lockdown.

The decision whether to lock down or not largely depends on the amount of ICU care available per capita.
Maybe they have a lot more capacity than us.

I think they also have fewer dickheads per capita as well. So maybe better social distancing, less panic buying, less barbeques and less going to the beach.
