Labour NEC passed a motion tonight put forward by Jon Lansman to abolish the post of Deputy Leader - i.e. Tom Watson’s role.

Motion *passed* by 17 votes to 10 but needed a 2/3 majority It will be discussed again tomorrow morning Watson wasn't at NEC for childcare reasons

Lansman only needs simple majority at tomorrow’s meeting to get abolition of deputy leader to conference floor. He fell just short of the 2/3rds needed to defy chair ruling motion out of order tonight. Tomorrow it’s in order

Getting rid of the post doesn't get rid of Watson in fact arguably it makes him more of a problem for the Corbynieri.

Turmoil in the Labour camp is fine by me.

I'm pretty sure Corbyn is happy with this move, and I doubt we'll get anything out of him other than the usual bland "Nowt to do with me, guv.  That's a decision for the NEC."

I think this is Momentum driving this isn't it?

Which if so confuses me a little, I thought they were mostly a younger demographic which supports remaining in the EU, which is also what Tom Watson keeps voicing.

Let's face it, logic is not the default thought process for Momentum...

Have seen some news pundits suggest that Corbyn might be going and they don't want Watson in place to help direct a 'centrist' leadership bid. This may be wild speculation...

This has all rather overshadowed the fact that Labour are also trying to oust Harriet Harman of all people.

Edit: Corbyn has finally stepped up and quashed it. Watson stays.

Hardly, just delaying the inevitable...

After his intervention, Mr Corbyn told reporters outside the conference centre that he "enjoyed" working with Mr Watson.

He later said: "The NEC agreed this [Saturday] morning that we are going to consult on the future of diversifying the deputy leadership position to reflect the diversity of our society.

Mr Lansman said he fully supported Mr Corbyn's proposal to review the deputy leader post.

"We need to make sure the role is properly accountable to the membership while also unifying the party at conference. In my view, this review is absolutely the best way of doing that," he said.

I thought this was her local party, because she was going for Speaker? It's nothing outside of that afaik, just they don't want a speaker who has to remain neutral as their MP and losing a voice in parliament.

Which is short sighted I think, someone with integrity as the speaker is worth more than a back bench MP with one vote.
