Turns out that it's counterintuitive, but the energy used in storing an 'always' on file and connecting it through the net to your mobile device is more than owning and playing a CD, especially if you play it more than once.

I read something the other day that claimed you would have to use an organic cotton 'bag for life' 10,000 times in order for it to be less environmentally impacting than using disposable plastic bags.

Also CDs could be used for multiple uses, like a beer mat, or a frisby, and many other such practical and fun uses.

I'm always doubtful of these claims and suspect there are important things they are not taking into account.

So yes streaming things take energy, but nobody just uses them to stream things? And what about the power of your equipment to play a CD, which is probably way more than your phone uses.

Think about how many servers spotify must have running, just to provide music.

as I wrote that, it then occured to me, that a cd manufacturing plant probably uses a lot of energy as well, and  stuff to make CDs :)

I guess it like Priuses being better for the environment, unless you take everything into account and compare them to a golf ;)

And then think about how many people it does this for. It's not 40k servers for one person. :) Also servers use varying amounts of power depending on how loaded they are.

Also for CDs, you need to add petrol costs for distribution.

Isn't there an oft use claim that electric cars (not hybrids) are less environmentally friendly than gas guzzlers. But when you break it down that assumes that the electric car uses dirtiest energy from coal-fired power, whereas they only measure the exhaust pipe emissions from the ICE vehicle not taking into account oil extraction environmental impacts.

There's a very well financed oil and coal lobby in the world fighting against the inevitable tide of renewable energy that is cleaner, cheaper and safer.

Australia is an interesting battleground here where coal lobby 'owns' govt but renewables benefit can no longer be sidelined.

I think part of that argument is around the JIT supply chain and exporting costs, but it's been a while since I sat and thought about that...
