I saw this on QI once, but they were saying they were used in New York.
I guess any children that had been in one of those regularly wouldn't be afraid of heights.....

Thank goodness most people are not engineers, who always see potential failures in any fabricated structure. 

Nowadays you would have to fill in a risk assessment form before installing such a baby cage

Omg that took me back when I was little in Brooklyn New York, we live in a similar building.not in a cage but the fire escape stairs n landings. I and my brother use to play there .
Scary nowadays,no safety net either. I wonder me mom wasn’t well. I guess my father
truly beat her head a lot.😞

Seen many a detective film using New York metal fire escapes, Ella.

The horizontal bars/handrails are far apart vertically, allowing a kid to slip through, so I assume as you are still here, you and your brother hung on well
