Zuckerberg’s social network is a politically agnostic tool for its more than 2 billion users, he has said. But Facebook, it turns out, is no bystander in global politics. What he hasn’t said is that his company actively works with political parties and leaders including those who use the platform to stifle opposition—sometimes with the aid of “troll armies” that spread misinformation and extremist ideologies.

Facebook to me is a sort of a necessary evil, like mobile phones!

I remember in the old days, when I was at college, Wednesday/Thursday, you discuss where to go Friday night, and we'd arrange to meet at some-one house or the pub at a set time, and that's what we did, once everyone was there we'd decide whether to say (which we usually did) or go elsewhere. Maybe there would be a last minute phonecall on the landline, usually 'cos someone was nto going out 'cos they had no money ;)

Now, it seems to be texting on the bus, on the way into town, and everything is last minute, obviously this can be a good thing, and save some hassle.

Facebook I originally went on to just share wedding/honeymoon photos with friends, as it was so much easier than any other method to share them but keep some "privacy". I remember still using email to keep in contact with ppl as well, especially friends who had moved away, to arrange visits, catch up etc, then messenger took over. Don't get me wrong, it's great when recently some friends came back to visit from Oz, so put an invite to an "event" on facebook, just saying what pub they would be at, at what time on what day etc, so ppl could turn up, saved them having to email chase ppl, those of us on FB could contact the few not on FB who may want to catch up.

The other thing I like is following musicians and bands I like, as I'm not for the most part into mainstream music, it's a great way of finding out tour dates, new releases, and info from the band themselves, rather than PR.

The whole corporateness of it and the scary cookie use does annoy me. For example, I don't "like" any corporations like Tesco, Coca-Cola etc, I don't really understand why ppl do, but the targeted ads I get are often scarily accurate, even though I don't surf the web on the browser I'm logged into facebook on, but they have that huge list of every comment, video, song etc I've "liked" :(

Having a political unit is worrying though. I mean when that guy shut down Trump's Twitter account, that was funny, 'cos Trump's an idiot, in my opinion, but if he had shut down another politician, I may approve of, or had taken comments out of context, it gets tricky.

And here's the problem, sadly ppl use twitter, fb, etc as their news source, and do just assume anything they read is fact such as those stupid posts about poppies and Christmas lights etc. being banned. Now if FB can remove actual lies, and false news, that's great, but being involved in politics is tricky, it either has to stay out, or help/hinder everyone in equal measure, but I'm not sure how you can do that. like on Have I Got News for You, where they'll make a joke about having had a go at one party for 5 mins, they better talk about the others for a bit ;)

I guess you could argue it's no different to the newspaper's peddling propaganda for their owners?

It sounds like FB want to do the "right" thing, but it sounds like they have in house fighting over the "right" thing, and will they got caught up with false positives, will ppl not understand satire?

KISS - go back to just helping ppl keep in contact :)

The link is an interesting read, sometimes ignorance is bliss, but that's another problem for another day :(

Unfortunately they went way beyond that too many years ago. :/ I'm sure there is a market for a facebook-lite that doesn't encourage addiction, genuinely lets you use it for useful purposes only...

...but when you are competing with a giant corporation that actively encourages dependency by it's users, you'd never get enough people switching over to it to make it work.

It's like ebay, there is no alternative because any alternative doesn't have the userbase.

I use it for one reason only. To keep in touch with the breeder we got our pup from and the rest of his litter brothers and sisters.
I find the whole site an absolute mess.

Twitter is useful for being first with news but I'm not daft enough to not to follow a story once the it's being filtered through main news sources to remove the crap.

I have refused point blank to go to Facebook, even though lots of people i know practically insist on me getting on it to keep up with them for numerous reasons, but i haven't and i won't, I use twitter mostly for news and since trump came in i didn't really use it much, since then i have never had more followers (not a lot but still way up) and retweets, and likes. But i like to think I'm savvy enough not to get conned by the bots and fake news :)

This is my problem with it all, there appears to be a lack of consistency.

Don't use my real name on FB - and after 5 years they block me as someone reported my account for not having a 'real' name - this was on Xmas Eve.

Cheers you bastards

So set up another account with another false name. See how long it takes this time.
