Another cold phone call scam (Re: Tax)

Watch out...

Got another weird one with an automated voice stating that I had tax problems, and would be put onto your case officer.

Then followed after a slight delay, with an English voice that started the old con trick, trying to get details, so I just put the phone down on him.

It was a UK phone number, and a scam, as the Tax office will never cold call you.

I do think it is a disgrace that people are allowed to put out such scamming calls that can cause worry, to those that are not used to such scams. They should get prison sentences if caught.

My brother-in-law has a system in place via BT, that all callers are intecepted by a AI female voice, which asks the caller their name, and that is passed on to my brother-in-law, and it is up to him if the call is accepted or not. This stops cold callers, as they do not know if their call is being heard by a human, as all they get if dissaproved, is the phone going dead.

Also a call by me to my brother-in-law goes straight though, once it has been initially accepted as an acceptable caller.

Details, itunes card/tax scam

Quote:
Hundreds of older and vulnerable people are getting ripped off by fraudsters who tell them to buy iTunes gift cards to pay their tax bills.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said there have been 1,500 reports of such scams since the start of last year.
Most victims are over 65 and lose £1,150 each on average.
HMRC has said it is working with Apple and campaign groups to make sure the public know how to spot the scam and to whom they should report it.
Here's how it works: Victims are first cold-called by the fraudsters, who pose as staff from HMRC.
They tell them they owe large amounts of tax.
The householders are then told to go and buy digital vouchers or gift cards, redeemable on sites such as iTunes, and read out the code.
Many of the victims agree to follow the instructions, as they don't know what an iTunes voucher is.
The conmen sell the codes on, or purchase high-value products, at the victim's expense.

Similar to the system Sky use.
Initially a pain in the hole until you approve all family and friends.
