when my dad is in a restaurant and fancies the apple pie, he always ask if it's hot or cold
if cold, then he has it with custard
if hot, with icecream.
he doesn't eat cream

If a restaurant served me cold apple pie I'd enquire why they were still open when the ovens weren't working.

Double entendres aside, what we call custard in Britain is probably nothing like what you would call custard in the States. It's basically a thickened vanilla flavoured egg-based yellow sauce. The French call it creme anglaise so if you google that you'll get a good idea of what it is. You might be thinking of it as "pudding" as you might call it, but it's not the same.
creme anglaise of France I have seen in stiff custard and some would make in the runny method. I haven't try the English version . But thank you for informing me😀
