Government agencies gave our private data to private firms

According to documents released as part of an ongoing court case between the UK government and Privacy International, GCHQ and MI5 didn't tell watchdogs they shared bulk communications data (BCD) and bulk personal datasets (BPD) with third parties.

The long-running case, which is being heard by the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, is considering the legality of mass data collection and storage, and the transfer of that data to other bodies.

So, "I've done nothing wrong, I don't mind my government spying on me" should become, "I've done nothing wrong, I don't mind my government spying on me and then giving lots of private social media data it slurped up about me to private companies without my consent"

Because what you send in a private message on Facebook, shouldn't be private?

Mass personal data....Either passing on or selling on to third parties.....Most of us have known this for years.

Same with spying on us to collect data, again its been done for years, and when found out, they just leagalise it in the name of protecting us.

The latest now is smart meters, as the data collected is in real time, and thus the reader of this info, knows you movements when in the house or not. This data could either be stolen or sold on to third parties. What if a housebreaker got this data, and knows when you will be in or out. What if the Government agencies need to know your whereabouts, and this data could be used in law eventually, as evidence of your timeline.

Conspiracy websites state that this is the main reason for rollout of smart meters, and 'GPS blackboxes' in cars becoming more numerous, is to track you whereabouts at al times.

Mass personnel data is held for years or indefinitely now, and is stored, in case your name is brought to their attention, at any time in the future,

Disliked or not Rob, Spying and mass data collection is happening in all Westernised countries.

Conspiracy websites have been saying this for years, and yet it goes ahead, and gathering pace.

It is happening, but thinking it's happening with smart meters is just stupid. It's an annoying distraction from the real ways in which they are doing it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't supporting or even creating conspiracy websites just to distract people from what they are really doing.

Bandicoot, I think you're missing the point, little black boxes in cars for insurance "reductions", shop loyalty cards to give us "discounts", have been  known legal way of doing this, just like google,a lot of us sign away anonymity for the perks we receive in return. We say "yes, I want free stuff, I don't care that you know where I've been driving, what I've been buying, what websites I go to, search for, where I access the internet from".

But the government selling/giving/sharing data is very different, although I guess they've been doing that for years with the electoral register. With more and more outsourcing this will only get bigger as private firms "share" information in "our" interest. Healthcare, probation, prisons h

I don't think the smart meter tracking does anything more than let them know when busy periods are, and how ppl are trying to save money, so they can pu their prices up in other ways ;)

We had a blocked drain, the pipe that runs to sewer under back garden, looked like a few doors down ppl flushing things they shouldn't :( Anyway, the guy told my missus they get this more and more now, as ppl have less baths (they shower more), flush less, use dish washers more etc because of of water meters, hence they push their plumbing services etc more!

Do you think I do not know that.
This is what is called the soft sell approach, to introduce these trackers into cars, start off by showing advantages, to hide the eventual disadvantages

Soon it will be compulsory for car makers to fit GPS tracking in all cars so that if the car crashes and air bags go off, emergency services will be called. Again the soft sell approach. But GPS tracking can and will be used for data collection and given to authorities if asked and/or sold on to third parties.

Smart meters:.... if you are not in the house, power is low, when in the house, power levels go up.  it does not take much effort to spot patterns of use.

In the UK, unlike some other countries, we can refuse Smart meters by law, I have already done so. But not just for big brother intrusion, but also safety issues, regarding EMF fields from their transmitter, acting on the human body.

Note the only exception is..., if you energy provider says that your analogue meter is too old and needs replacement due to safety, they will likely fit a smart meter but must be set to DUMB if you insist, where it cannot transmit data, ie, no EMF, and hence must be read locally.

Agree with you there, Admars.
