Sympathy post...

Hehe, not really.

Been laid up this week with possible ligament damage to my knee, which just decided to go when walking to the bus stop to go to work.

Doc at A&E reckoned it was arthritic - yeah, really?

Got a second opinion at my GP who thinks it is probably ligament damage and should clear up within a couple of weeks, else it's x-ray time.

What I had't realised was just how bloody painful something like this is, I've found I can barely move.

Anyone else been though something similar with any advice?

I feel your pain...

i tore my medial ligament, and medial meniscus on my right knee 7 weeks ago playing football.

When i went over there was an almighty crack and all on the pitch heard it, a few expletives and most thought i had broken my leg... luckily one of the spectators was an off duty paramedic.

Ibupfren and paracetamol will be your friend...

I could put weight on the leg and wanted to avoid A&E on the saturday night, Sunday morning, so went in lunctime on the sunday... only to be told off by the nurse!

Was laid up for a week with a full leg brace, went back to work the following week, and have had combination of physio sessions, including acupuncture.

Fortunately i have had treatment through work... NHS appointment would have been last week, 6 weeks from injury to first physio, thats a long time for things to get worse!

I am now back in the gym daily doing resistence excercise regime, cycling, cross trainer... all is good, still painful in the mornings, and over night!

Prognosis was 6-12 weeks for recovery... but as the physio said for bloke of my age i have good legs (cardio gym work), the muscles and strength in my knees saved me from more serious/permanent damage... the lesson when you are in your mid forties, dont play football with those in their late teens/early twenties... even girls!

I have a problem with one of my knees, went to the dr, Jan or Feb this year, gave me anti inflamtories for 4 weeks, they didn't touch it, the pain is in one side, comes and goes, mostly with weight on it, worse the weekend when I've been on my feet for 2 days.

so he then sent me for MRI scan, month later had that, he looked at results, suggested physiotherapy if I was open to that before cutting me open tot poke about to see what's up, as MRi showed nothing too bad, just some fluid!

So funnily enough I got a self referral form for physio, 2 months later, spent 30 mins with physio, who was pretty thorough, explained MRi results, and from feeling my knee he could tell some fluid already displaced, so with time more would go. He then got me to lay down, stand with no shoes on, and said I over-pronate which is what has probably caused the problem. I said my dad had said it was just old age, he explained that the MRi showed their was no deterioration which is good, so not old age :)

So, he showed me some insoles I should buy at amazon.co.uk, and then used some software to create an exercise routine for me to do, some using no equipment, some using a football, some using an exercise band, which he also helpfully found for me on Amazon :)

So got home, ordered the insoles, and band, and followed his plan. it's still not 100%, Sunday later afternoon it still starts to ache, but before, Tuesday morning it would hurt to change gear :(

I think the problem is having 2 young children, I don't get to rest it at weekend, so the rest I get sat on my arse at a desk all week gets undone the weekend :(

Yes, leg and knee problems can put you horrible pain. definitely sympathise.

A few years ago I had reduced my calcium intake due to another medical problem, so I twisted my knee at work by catching my boot in a metal girder and it was bad, real bad, and was on a crutch for three weeks with pain killers and a compression bandage, hell of a pain, still had to work through it being self employed, (no work no pay), but was ok after that and good as new.

I had to lay off the reduced calcium as the doc said it did not help my bones and made the situation worse. So one medical problem can lead to another.

Knees, ankle, foot and boomps-a daisy (British nursery rhyme Ella)

Long story short knee was bloody painful when stress put on it in any other direction than straight forward/back.
Long series of Docs and Consultants ending with an MRI.
'Yes if you look here you can see you have a tear in the cartlidge'
Loose flap which she said they just go in through two biro sized holes in the front of the knee and file it flat. Up to about 6/8 weeks recovery but you should be able to walk (hobble) out of the hospital the same afternoon.
6 months wait for the op. By the time we're close I've actually tried a little jog on the treadmill in the gym and nothing hurts. So I ring the NHS advice line and ask what they think. Nice nurse says if you don't think you need invasive surgery you're the best judge of your own body.
Never been back since (for that) and now run as far as my wind lasts without pain.

Having said that I went along with pain in the ball of my foot a year or so back and was told, politely. 'Look your getting old and sh*t wears out. If it hurts rest it or stop doing it.'

EDIT: Forgot ankle.
5k into a 7k run something snapped. Honestly felt like it had broken.
Apparently it was tendonitis. the tendon or the sleeve it runs through gets inflammed and one just will not run through the other.
Was hobbling for the best part of 6 months as unless you're a very wealthy football player or club who has an in to the best specialists in town the next morning it's just a matter of time. Much longer time when you still have to work.
