Microplastics in tap water

Hopefully we've all heard about microbeads of plastic floating around the oceans and being eaten by small fish, and people worried about the effect that has on the ecology of the seas...

...now we may need to be worried about our tap water.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/09/survey-finds-small-amounts-of-microplastics-in-tap-water-the-world-over/

Quote:
Overall, 83 percent of the 159 samples contained some amount of microplastics. Those samples came from various places in the US, Europe, Indonesia, Uganda, Beirut, India, and Ecuador. No country was without a plastic-positive water sample. In fact, after testing a handful of samples from each place, the lowest contamination rate was 72 percent. The highest—found in the US—was 94-percent positive rate.

I'm sure Trump would spin that as good proper American water. But even so, 72% the lowest rate, is a bit worrying.

I haven't drank - straight from the tap water for probably 20 odd years, our Scottish water is supposed to be fresh and healthy for us. My family drink it no problem but i have never liked the taste and when there is a water problem where it comes out dirty , it has put me off for life.

Many times over the years after a night out when  i have forgot to buy water or juice for my hangover i just suffer not drinking any tap water....if i have to quench my thirst i will just glug down another beer.

My shopping revolves around where i can get my fresh mineral water - Gerolsteiner and Deeside sparkling water only in a glass bottle  is the only water i drink.

Ah...  bottled water... :)

In Orb’s survey, researchers also noted that they found microplastics in a few samples taken from bottled water.

On the subject of bottled water...

There is no evidence it is better for you and, indeed, it may be less safe than tap water. Two thirds of water from the tap comes from surface water (reservoirs, lakes, rivers) and the rest from ground water (underground geological formations that store rainwater). It is subject to stringent treatment standards – according to Professor Paul Younger, a hydro geochemist, these make it safer than bottled water.

I know what you mean about the taste though, some types of water do taste different.

Likely full of fluoride dosing, where you can actually smell it. Councils that dose in certain counties of the UK, do it either by hourly dosing by machinery as a percentage dose, or weekly dosing by manual dosing where fluride container is turned on, dispersing so many gallons of the stuff and then turned off, the latter is easily spotted in a white bath as the water is pure blue. You do not want to drink it on that day.

As for microplastics, it has been known about for twenty year, as warnings were given out not to use the same plastic flask or bottle too long for refills of drinks, as plastic come off due to UV light from sun breakdown the plastics. so it is best to replace plastic flask or bottles regulary.

This is not the only dangers of water, as in my region of England in the home counties we live with hard water.

It clogs up most domestic equipment with limescale, but there is also growing evidence that it can be dangerous to health over a long time period. Have a read of link below if you want nightmares.

This is why I turn to alcoholic drinks as an alternative to water. It might kill you as well, but at least you go out happy :D

I started drinking sparkling mineral water at first as an alternative to sugary fizzy drinks and much better for your teeth.

Just about all plastic bottled water has trace minerals in it and does not come from a good source but the two i have mentioned especially the Gerolsteiner has near enough the RDA of minerals in it.

I was doing the same, taking a bottle of sparkling water to work during lunch, instead of a sugary soft drink, and my dentist complained that it was erroding the back of my teeth.

You can't win  (and why just the back of my teeth?)
