I think that's debatable because why on earth would you have UK food standards but allow others to import at lower standards?  That sounds to me like politicking and scaremongering, as is the case with many Bill amendments.  Now, if there was a move to remove or reduce UK standards then I would agree with you.

And you clearly can't be talking about US food standards as only the other day Nancy Pelosi was raising concerns about UK food standards being lower than US food standards...

I'm pretty confident that our food standards are higher than those of the EU.

Very likely, but this isn't the point.

If it's scaremongering, why not vote for the ammendment to enshrine it into law? Because after Brexit it won't be protected by law.

Why would you not want this to be law?

Because it's pointless law seeing as UK food standards will already be covered in legislation.

Bit like how everyone is banging on about the Home Office adding legislation for public order offences already covered in existing legislation.

We don't need more law that can confuse matters, we need proper enforcement, whether that's Her Majesty's Constabulary or the Food Standards Agency...

You'll find the guidance here: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/food-standards-agency#:~:text=The%20Food%20Standards%20Agency%20(FSA,the%20standards%20are%20being%20met.

And the FSA has their own website here: https://www.food.gov.uk/

The point is these standards can be changed on a whim by the government without a vote in parliament.

If they decide, they can just allow lower standards in from abroad.

Depends how much you trust your government I guess. Clearly you do.

Are you talking about HMG in general or is this another Conservative bashing attempt?  BTW, happy to bash Conservatives where warranted...

The whole point of having General Elections is to bring in the government of choice to the majority and if food standards become a big issue (which it really isn't at the moment) then that would become an election issue prior to the vote.

ages ago, I read about the US chicken deal, and how we'd get cheap US chicken, treated with chlorine which would be bad, but it did seem a bit scaremongiry, and at the time I wasn't sure if it was just propaganda, anyway:https://www.thegrocer.co.uk/food-safety/chlorinated-chicken-explained-why-do-the-americans-treat-their-poultry-with-chlorine/555618.article

the original article is quite old, and it links to this:https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56eddde762cd9413e151ac92/t/59747741bf629a8e3d01a494/1500804930480/Chlorinated+Chicken.pdf

there's a difference between changing the standards, and lowering them.

They could just be different, not better, not worse, just eating chicken will make you smell like you've been in a swimming pool ;)

Could you stop looking at everything through a party lens for just once? Some of us don't look lovingly all cooey eyed at any party, no matter what it promises to deliver us.

Also this government promised before the election it would not allow chlorinated chicken as part of any trade deal. Now it's back on the table. And negotiating trade deals is time consuming, so to undo any deal that allows a lowering of food standards may well cost us a lot more than not doing it in the first place.

A bit like Brexit.

Oddly enough I'm not, I'm just asking whether you are.

I also object to the accusation of looking "lovingly all cooey eyed" as I would argue that is not what I've demonstrated over the years.

I just really don't get the objections over chlorinated chicken, what on earth is the problem with something that the US with a population of over 300m people seem to have zero issue with?  Nancy Pelosi seems to think US food standards are high enough and I've not seen anything to suggest that the abhorrence for it here from people who haven't eaten it in the UK and may well have eaten it on holidays/visits to the US is reflected in the US.  So what is it?

I'm not wedded to the idea of offering chlorinated chicken if it doesn't comply with our food standards, but if it is deemed to be fine there then it should be allowed.  End of.

I mean, contracts don't mean anything anyway, especially ones our government signs...

As we are about to get an "Australian style deal with the EU", which is also known as a "Sierra Leone style deal", or a "Tajikistan style deal"...
