It depends what you call advertising really, if you boil it down to someone paying someone else to get a fixed message across, that would include a lot of things which are advertising but less obviously so.

If you make a Corbyn Hates Jews meme and it's organically picked up and spread, that's not advertising but can have some effect on the outcome of the election. But if you are a political party, or organisation with something to gain, and you pay a company or person to create and spread memes, I'd count that as advertising and far more insidious when it's not been organically spread but by bots or other organisations manually pushing it.

This is my point exactly.  This will have more effect on an election than any paid advertising...
